User Title clarifications

So as of recent I wanted to see if I could change my UT, come to find out I can't til 4/1/18, no problems there if you are not American or in a country where it goes day month it is 1/4/18. Upon looking at the requirements for UT the max characters is 50, not clarified if it counts spaces or not. So I went to a couple people who can accept or deny UT's(Admins only), and asked what their personal rulings were about the UT I wanted, being "our brain thinks, our heart beats, so lets think to the beat" that one has 49 characters without, 60 with spaces. What I took out of that was, these 2 admins don't have a meeting of the minds on the subject, perhaps it is something that should be discussed amongst non-admins. If I can get @Matthew to comment on the subject too that would be great as he is the one you are meant to ask if you have questions about things in the User Center. What are people's opinions on the subject, if Matthew can verify that 50 characters is just a number should it be raised, kept the same or what so? I ask this because of this UT "The trust of the innocent is the liar’s most useful tool. – Stephen King", I'm not attacking the owner of that UT in anyway, just curious, as one admin said below 50 with spaces and that has 72, nearly 1.5x the limit. Should we allow UT's such as that one to be accepted still even though the limit is meant to be 50? Throw your opinions below. I just think there needs to be a meeting of the minds, and if Matthew can clarify the limit so be it, if not, then possibly raise it?

 

Administration is not perfect.
Sometimes UT's slip through the cracks.
Sometimes admins may feel a UT is acceptable, its at their discretion.
The "restrictions" aren't really restrictions - Their guidelines because a human manually handles each one - Not a system.
Sometimes admins make exceptions to guidelines.
That's their choice as administration.
You could have sent an admin a PM asking why ur UT was denied and asked about that one.
Why you chose to post it is beyond me unless u expect community support over ur 12 character to long UT.

I asked him to create a thread in the feedback section with a suggestion as well after discussing with him on Discord.

 

Wasn't about me getting denied, because as I stated, I haven't even submitted my request yet. I asked the 2 admins what they thought of my UT that I wanted, and got their responses. And as Shin stated above me, he wanted me to see what would be brought up, not a personal subject, it is a Sythe subject. I'm not the only person who wants a UT as many others have them too. We are a community and people have their own opinions that they are allowed to express.

Here’s my thought: if you don’t have a strict limit, then is there really a limit? Say it’s a 150 character limit but yours ends up being 155, and they decide sure that’s close enough. Next person has 160 and says it’s only 5 past the last person, so they let it slide. Keep going and keep going, where does it end? What’s the point of having the 150 limit in the first place?

I understand it’s frustrating, but it’s just easier to have a true maximum in this instance

 

I agree completely, I just don't know if there is a reason that 50 is the number right now, I mean the site hasn't spontaneously combusted from longer, so what's the point?

 

Likely due to making it fit well in the profile in the past forum software, VBulletin. If it can be lengthened, no reason not to.

Mine's even longer ;p I made my current UT back in 2011 through a slip in the system I guess, and since then I haven't been able to edit it to even remove names or change colors because of how over the limit it already is.

I agree that the limit should be raised and that once it is, it should be strictly enforced. That's the best way to be fair, and the current limit is kind of low.

 

Id say @Time To Buy is reasonable, some users have 4 ranks it just seems to look better if the user title can be above all 4 ranks just my opinion.

 

There should be a strict limit, I don't really mind if it's lengthened, but should definitely be shorter than 100 visible characters. If you're not a donator the max length is around 13 visible characters for the default ones, considering donators are allowed to have glowing and enticing effects having huge titles would be a bit too much imo. You always have signatures for things like quotes, anyway.

 

Ide like to see, longer options spread amongst the different donor amounts.

I think that would be cool.

Isn't the limit due to technical rendering/loading times or something like that, the longer u extend the UT's the more rendering/loading the site has to do, across tens of thousands of UT's that's a lot more pressure on the site.

I know that's why extending threads from 20 showing to 30 or w/e was such a big deal.

I don't have an issue with up to 100 characters provided it doesn't screw the site technically.

 

Just make it like 60 or 70 characters INCLUDING SPACES for EVERYONE. But, it should be strict and I don't believe anyone should be allowed to go over that limit.

It's suppose to be a user title not a user paragraph.

Characters do include spacing. Clarification of common knowledge is not necessary. The limit should be strict and admins should enforce it. Any UT's above the limit should be reverted.

 

They should be reverted if the new engine can't handle it, which.. well let's see, it can handle them.. so change the limit.
