I am Catholic/Christian, I do not see a difference so I just picked both, I believe in God and Jesus and what not. But, I have been silenced in an argument over this topic.

He said,"Can your God create a mountain that he cannot lift? If he can, how does that make him almighty, If he can't, how does that make him almighty?"

Discuss what you think of this.

P.S. I don't want to hear your shit of how God isn't real. I understand your beliefs, and respect them, but I am not asking you why and should I believe in him.

When in doubt, quote scripture: Luke 4:12 "Do not put the Lord your God to the test"

It's all cockamamie bull shit, but it's usually how a devout Christian answers (infuriating, I know!)

Quoting the bible leaves you open to everything, supporting genocide, sexism, cannibalism, slavery.

Any method of reasoning can bring you to the same conclusion, though. It all depends on which degree you decide to take it to. "For the greater good" is just one philosophy, however cliche, that proves that.

EDIT: However.... I don't think the bible tells you in any way that genocide or cannibalism is acceptable..

I'll edit this when I find it, gimme 3 mins.

EDIT:
1 Samuel 15:1 - 31
John 6:56

The act of Samuels verse is genocide. Whether a reason be justifiable or not, genocide is genocide.
The act of Johns verse refers to a cannibalistic act.

Ok, I'll give you genocide, but the Last Supper is suppose to be metaphorical. I would also give you cannibalism, but it's already widely interpreted as a metaphor, hence the popular ritual, "communion". Therefore, I don't think anyone can rationalize consumption of human flesh with that passage.. unless they're crazy, of course, which brings us back to the degree on which people rely on the bible for guidance

well the reasoning through that paradox is this

A. god is in everything
B. god can do anything, he is omnipotent.
C. god created a number of mountains.
D. god can take the form of a child.
E. a child can not lift a mountain.

therefore, has created a mountain that he can not lift

One can argue that He is not omnipotent if He cannot retain His divine powers when in the form of a child.

Jeremiah 19:9
Ezekiel 5:10
Leviticus 26:29

I'm curious, is there a verse in the bible that says, God is everything?

Touche :>

I don't think it's worth picking apart what blazinfasst said, it doesn't rationalize the paradox, but I think he means to say that God can become anything.

I'm actually curious to know does it say God is omnipotent?
I know people claim he is, and I agree he should be for all religious people sum him up to be. But does the biggest fiction book in the world say he is?

Person A - You must believe in the lord or I'll hurt you
Person B - How religious, believe what I say or I'll hurt you.
Person A - Now your getting it *hits with book*

God is great fiction; I must say...

It's not god, it's the bible that is fiction. So I guess in turn God is fiction...whatever.

@OP - You cannot lift a mountain because if you do it will cease to be a mountain and be a boulder, mountains go deep under the Earth's crust.

This, is a great answer. I really hope I get to say this.

your example doesnt happen, ever.

what is stopping him from lifting the earth? he would still be lifting a mountain in the process.

Re 19:6 ...Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

One can argue that He is not omnipotent if He cannot retain His divine powers when in the form of a child.

one can argue that he is not omnipotent if he can not do both.

This is an arguments atheists like.
However it's contradictory,
if you said yes, it means that God can create something greater than Himself. So, he is no God !
And if you said no, it means that God is unable to do all things.
Therefore, the term “all things” in the phrase “God is able to do all things” excludes the absurdities.
It cannot include things that contradict His divine attributes; things that would make Him less than God, like, forgetting, sleeping, etc. Instead, it includes only “all things” that are consistent with Him being God. This is what the statement “God is able to do all things” means. It cannot be understood in the absolute sense; it must be qualified.

What you have just stated is that God cannot do everything.
Therefore Gods powers are limited.
definition of omnipotent from Princeton, almighty: having unlimited power
Therefore God is not omnipotent.

Either he can not and he actually follows logic and thus the bible is wrong giving proof that god does not exist or logic does not apply to him so it is not a question.

Catholics believe that Jesus mother is saint, that's ridiculous, God clearly said that she is not saint and that he picked a normal woman to give a birth to Jesus.

Moreover, what's the point can he lift the biggest mountain or not, it does not change anything, we do not know so much to be able to understand such things.

Christians for the win, thanks.
