Spider's would die, they know it, why the F would they go into your mouth? Plus, if it did happen, would probably be in poor countries where people sleep outside or something.

 

Eh it is possible, although I would imagine it happens while you sleep and that the spiders are the smaller ones. I don't think there's any risk of disease or infection from them, seeing as the acid in your stomach would probably kill it and sterilise it instantly.

The chances of your swallowing a spider while you are asleep are almost none. But I guess nothing is impossible. I'm not aware of any research that's taken place to come up with this figure...

To be able to swallow a spider in your sleep you'd have to be very unlucky. You'd have to be sleeping with your mouth pretty wide open. If a spider landed on your lips or tongue, both sensitive areas, you'd more than likely wake up before you swallowed it. It'd have to hit the back of your throat, dead-centre and on target to be able to be swallowed. And let's not forget a spider isn't going to approach the mouth of it's predator. Why would it even come near your mouth?

I think the saying/"fact", is in fact, total bullshit. ^_^

I sleep with my mouth open so this is probably somewhat true...
Although I live in the UK so we don't get any big spiders or poisonous ones (that I know of, or what are common) here so it's not too bad...

As a few others said stomach acids would just kill the spider anyway so it's really harmless. My brother did wake up and had a pretty nasty looking spider crawling across his chest though when he was little... shit him up quite a bit but was funny. Sucks to be him lol

I struggle to believe the actual fact, what I don't understand is how people seem to assume it's impossible for a spider to go down someones throat while they're asleep. All it takes is them to fall off the roof and gravity will do its job.

 

What?! I seriously don't believe this. How are we not aware? I mean how deeply do we actually need to sleep to actually not feel a spider in our mouths? Wow. If its true, it's definitely shocking...

How do you know for sure its true? You don't have a source of ANY kind, and the only people who sleep with their mouths that wide open are those who have clogged nasal cavities. Not to mention that it goes against all survival instincts of a spider to crawl into a mouth.

 

I think that he meant that all we know is that we've HEARD that
1. A person's mouth is very sensitive, and that we would immediately wake up if a spider did crawl into our mouths
2. It goes against all survival instincts for an animal to crawl i to a person's mouth.

I think that he means that our knowledge is superficial.
I mean, do we know for sure? Do we understand that out mouth is full of sensitive nerves? Do we know the relation between sensitivity and nerves?
And also, what do we know about the psychology of animals and their survival instincts?

None of you guys are taking spider depression into account, maybe the spider is unhappy at home and wants to end its own life?

 

You're constantly inhaling and exhaling when you breath, which obviously occurs during sleep. Why would a spider move closer to a large, wet, moving object, which when exhaling, releases enough air to actually gently move the spider, should it be close enough.
