Suicide, Emos, and depression...

These are all serious topics that are all related. If you haven't noticed there are a lot of kids called "emos" if you want to generalize them, that where black and listen to emo music and "cut" themselves. I have not met one emo kid that I found to actually be depressed or have thoughts of suicide. They are just doing it for attention.

On to Suicide. Along with emos some people that are emo say they think about committing suicide. I doubt this but I do not know the heart or thoughts of the kid so I can not say that for a fact. I have found that people don't go around announcing that they are thinking of committing suicide. They only tell there closest friends or trusties. One of my old girlfriends best friend and grandma died in a period of 2 weeks, and she would tell me how she thought about killing herself. I don't know if this was because of actual depression from her friend dieing or whether she wanted more attention from me. She never told anyone else about it so I'm pretty sure she was serious. My Dad also had a friend a month ago commit suicide. Know one had any clue he was going to do it because he never told anyone. The assumed reason why he did it was because he wasn't taking his anti depressants. These are the reasons I don't think that emos are actually thinking what they say they are and are just trying to do it for attention. People actually thinking about committing suicide don't tell many people because then they would most likely get talked out of it.

Depression ties all of these topics together since they all revolve around it. The reason people commit suicide is because they are depressed. The reason people act emo are because they are either depressed or want attention. Depression is a big problem that should be dealt with more often. Depressed people commit suicide, cut themselves, and are a danger to society in general.

I completely agree. It is almost like the same as being a jock is strived for. I think they do it for attention like some jocks do. I play football for my highschool but I do it for the love of the sport not because I want to be in the in crowed. It seems like a lot of people choose to be emo or a jock because they want attention of some sort rather then actually being depressed/suicidial or liking the sport.

Honestly, there are three types of "depressed" people in this world.

1) Weak/spoiled people
I'll give you an example. "My mom won't buy me a horse, so I'm really sad. I'm going to now begin doing drugs and smoking to relax my pain of not getting whatever I want. Wait, my pain only got worse. I guess now I'm depressed and need to cut myself."

2) Posers
"All my friends are 'emo.' The music I listen to encourages cutting yourself, and I like the clothes they wear. I'm going to begin to wear 'emo' clothes and cut myself, because I want to conform to non-conformity."

3) People who have actually had some form of trauma.
"My mother died, leaving me as a child of a single parent. My dad's in the hospital, and can no longer support me and my relatives. I now have to sacrifice my education and chance at a high-paying job later on, to just try to support my family. Then, I got fired from my job, and have nowhere else to turn except depressing music, and I have to transfer my emotional pain to physical pain."

It's quite clear to see which of these people I actually have some respect for, but the sad truth is in this fucked up country, the VAST majority of "depressed" people are either over-reacting, mentally unstable bitches OR posers. If they're posers, honestly I don't give two shits if they end up doing something stupid. And if they're over-reacing, mentally unstable bitches then I feel like they should get some counseling and whatnot, but it shouldn't be our responsibility [unless we're a close friend/family member] to make sure this happens.

I have myself met people that are so called "emo" and are severely depressed, but we are to deal with our depression and the "emo's" excuse provided for cutting themself is that the physical pain caused by the cuts focuses their mind away from the emotional pain they are experiencing, though if that where the case, than why do they cut sumbols and letters instead of just cutting a line in the spot it would most likely hurt, but instead they cut thereself in places that will be seen, and they act even though to thereself that they don't want it to be seen, they lie to theirselves to convince theirself that they are not seeking out attention,

Emo is short-hand for emotional. Basically a person that is sometimes over or under emotional about certain information they receive. It is mostly a psychological state. Some will grow out of it and some will continue to think as they do now. The main reason they become Emo is not for attention or to tell someone they wanna commit suicide. "Real Emo's" are more relaxed and apathetic if you will. They generally act gloomy but, they do have a fun side. And they are different and admit it and want to show it. The music sometimes help define the differences.

The "emo" suicides you hear about are not entirely because their emo. Like you said depression does play a big part. Lots of people have the feeling that their life is pointless. So they take their life to attract attention. Its not being emo that makes you kill yourself. Its feeling pointless.

Like I said the last two times. Emo doesn't always mean "I want attention." It is more of a style.

I disagree with some of your thread. Some I don't. The part where you say Emo's are just at it for the attention. I just think that's rediculous. If that were true then what type of person doesn't want attention? I know this because, I myself am an "Emo-Goth" if you want to call it that. But, I don't wanna commit suicide. I just wanna listen to my music, have friends, and be left alone when I want to be left alone. Simple as that.

Emo use to be a type of music, accompanied by the people who liked that music. Now, all it is is a big excuse to be different, however, while trying to be different, they don't realize that they're doing the same thing millions are doing, and not being different at all.

From experience, I can honestly say that when you're depressed, and you feel like breaking down, one of the last things you'll think of is, "Oh, I want to become emo, because I'm depressed, and emo's are depressed.".

They aren't depressed. Most of my friends who are 'emo' are happy people, they just like the clothes and overall style of this trend.

Wow. I'm sorry, but if that isn't stereotyping I don't have a clue what is... When did I ever say I wouldn't be open minded? When did I ever bring religion into this discussion...? I didn't so please keep it out. They have other posts for that. I would rather you and your other stereotyping friends keep my religion and other peoples out of this discussion. Just to clarify some stuff. When I said they are just doing it for attention I meant they are just doing it as a fashion statement or click thing. That is why I compared it to being a jock. Some jocks actually love the sport they play (like me) and others just do it so they can hang out with there friends that are jocks and get recognition as a jock.

What I am trying to get at here is what people think about depression, suicide, emos. Why they act that way. If you are emo explain what it is and why you are one? Mainly what peoples views are on emos if you think there is such a thing and what you think about these people.

They do something stupid, so instead of facing the consequences they take the easy way out, and instead of living life they end it prematurely. And as for death, death is nothing to fear.
When it happens it happens, and no one can escape death.

I've had my own episodes, leading me into a severe 7 year long depression (I am now just starting to pull out of it) and some other illnesses I don't feel like explaining now. Well, I guess I should start the story... When I was five years old my grandparents on my mothers side got into a near fatal car accident and were in a coma for a few months, grandmother had a stroke while driving and that was why they crashed. Her mind was altered in a child like state, was very bad for me, because I was extremely close to her. About 4 years later, my uncle died (her son) at age 33 (so young...) I wasn't too close to him but I was enough that it affected me...

Fast forward another year... I find my grandmother dead in her room. Yeah, that really was traumatizing for me... on the day of her funeral I get news of my grandfather dying (dads side) of lung cancer... heh bad day. Weeks later, my dad gets into a motorcycle accident where he needed his arm rebuilt and put three screws into his arm, but recovered from it about a year later.

Not sure how long after (at least 2 weeks) I watch my grandfather die a painful death drowning in his own bodily fluids, he lived to 84 smoking at least 3 packs a day since age 7 (yeah probably not 3 packs back then) but you get the idea.
This all happened when I was 10 years old... It's when my depression started. Well, I was diagnosed with depression at 10 and given my first anti depressant. I didn't like it so I decided not to take it. At age 13 I tried to commit suicide for my first time, but I decided against it (and I didn't really have the means to do it quick and easily without getting caught then). Trucking on a few more years, 15 years old I attempt to hang myself in our shed. I do it with an extension cord and get myself on the beam and I start hanging... I pass out.

I wake up later in an emergency room (apparently my dad went to get the lawn mower from the shed and found me). I was transferred to a local BMC (Behavior Medicine Center) for an Inpatient session. I was released a week later on new anti depressants. The medication I was receiving did not help me, I continued to worsen in my depression ... at 16 I meet a girl and fall in love yeah yeah... so I thought. We were together for about 7 months before she decides she wants to break up with me, at the time I turned 17, was about 4 days after my birthday. I was devastated naturally... but I had hope of recovering the relationship, because she sent me a voice mail that was was very vague about breaking up. Well no one wants to read all this bf/gf shit so I'll cut to the chase, she becomes aware of my weaknesses and tells me to just go kill myself because no one would want me anyways. So, I follow her instruction, and take 100 sleeping pills, 32 aspirin, with vodka straight from the bottle.

I call her and tell her what I did, and fall asleep on the phone. My parents found me pretty much right after I fell asleep, and carried me to the car, and took me to the local ER. I remember waking up in the car, I was hallucinating pretty hardcore. When we got to the ER I couldn't walk at all, everything was spinning and then I can't remember anything after that.

Although I do remember waking up when the tube went down my throat, into my windpipe... they decided to do the one that goes down my nostrils instead. I was out for 2 days, out mentally (I couldn't remember shit but my body was active). When I was getting ready to be transferred to the BMC I was going to be sent to, the cafider (If you don't know what that is don't ask) that was in me was pushed too hard and punctured my bladder, and when they took it out I was pissing blood -.- good thing I really couldn't feel shit from all the crap that was in me (I don't know what kind of drugs they put me on) well yeah, After I get out of the BMC (one week stay) I was fine for 3 days until my ex bitch called me and asked why I wasn't dead, my parents intervened before I could hurt myself, and took me too another hospital (BMC) and I had to stay at that one for fucking a month... I almost got transferred to a long term facility because I was so fucked up. Well, in there I was put on medication that is actually working for me (I'll put the medications/dosages for note of anyone who may have problems like me that wants information).

I am now having weekly therapy sessions and monthly psychiatrist sessions. I'm doing quite well now, although my motivation is low, it is rising and I hope to have this all sorted out soon, hope my story has inspired/helped in any way. Here is my medications and the dosages as promised:

Honestly, good for you. Obviously, you've had shit that has pushed you over the edge, and this has nothing to do with "being emo" or trying to impress anyone. Hopefully, medication will continue to improve, so people like you who have great intentions and try to fight their depression have a better chance. I'm proud of you

If I wanted to impress anyone I would just make a blog about this on myspace and be an emo god . Just sharing my story, hopefully it helps anyone somehow, I know there is way harder things than what I have gone through. And that should inspire more people too!
