    Stick shifts fun?

Going to go check out my mustang at the private sellers house next Thursday and it's going to be Manual transmission.
Everybody at my school thinks they're Badass and says no mustang is a mustang without one and I personally wouldn't mind driving one.
I asked a lot of family members and majority said not to get one, but my uncle who I really look up to and is in general a smart guy, says that if I were to get one that it should definitely get it as my first car because then I'd enjoy it the most. So he recommends I do get the car.
Id like to know if anybody who owns, or has owned, thinks they are fun and worth it?

And yes I do realize that traffic is a pain in the ass but how often does a a 16 year old drive in traffic...

well first of all can you drive stick to begin with? imo I don't think starting with stick would be a good starter car because depending on how fast you can pick it up you may do some damage to your engine..and you also don't know how the previous owners treated the car for all you know you buy it today and the tranny drops tommorow.

It's your choice really I was going to start with stick shift but I just didn't wanna take the risk but it really didn't matter now that I think of it because my first car only lasted me about 3 months hahaha..

Ps. Once get you the hang of it stick shit is eaaaasy

    Stick shifts fun?

I have a friend that owned a stick car and he always let me drive it.

It's actaully a lot of fun, but if you live in a heavily populated area, having to downshift all the time will be a bitch.

If you hae some coordination, it shouldn't be hard to pick it up.

Also, stick is a hell of a lot better to drive then auto. You're actaully doing something instead of just sitting there, looking out the window.

However, don't expect to be texting or anything like that when you're driving.

Of course your friends at school think shift stick is cool, they are in the "fast and furious" mentality. Your older family friends suggest auto because it's just much simpler to drive.

I suggest getting a manual simply because it's good to know how to drive them in case you ever need to in the future. Just remember to go easy on the car and try not to be the bad ass 16 year old revving his engine like a loser.

Stick shift is sooooo much fun because you literally control everything. I can't live without it now.

    What firez said.

My first car was manual, and yeah it took a while to get used to .. But then I bought an auto and I had to sell it coz it was so boring to drive.

Also, a 99 - 04 mustang will have some the 'easiest" shifters of any car. Your shifter just literally glides ino place as long as you don't force it too fast. It almost follows a "track".

If you are just starting to drive, I wouldn't suggest trying to learn stick until you get fairly good at driving. Also, as a 16 year old male with little driving experience, your insurance will be through the roof on a mustang.

Actually, learning how to drive a stick is the best way. If you can drive a stick, you can easily drive automatics.

Well that's a relief. I'm getting an 02 Mustang GT.

Also, I have about 5 family members including my dad who knows how to drive sticks and is willing to teach me.
And the car braking down and stuff wont be an issue because not be an issue because my uncle who retired but once was a certified mechanic and he is going to come and check the car out.

Best way to learn is by getting someone to show you the basics, then just driving up an down a large wide industrial road that is not busy. Your going to stall a few times, ride the clutch a bit, but nothing is worse then hearing your dad say "no no no , not like that" and similar while your trying to learn.

Honestly I picked it up in 30 mins but I used to paddok bash old cars when I was younger an ride motorbike so I knew how to work a clutch already..

    Good luck man.

Honestly, I will never own another vehicle that's not a manual.
I hate automatic transmissions for many reasons.

    Defiantly get the car :p

I like stick and all but I hate replacing the clutch after 30,000 miles. I would say go for the stick because you have friends and family willing to help you; your uncle is a mechanic and that's a major bonus.

If I were you I would get the stick shift. Screw what anyone else thinks or what's the "in" thing. Do what you want to do, trust your instincts.

In Australia it's the social norm to learn on manual transmission pretty much. People that learn on Automatic transmission rarely hear the end of the fact that they've "only" got license to drive an automatic car. I tend to change between transmissions a lot. Once you get used to manual transmission it's about as mundane as automatic to be honest.

Then again I'm not really too in to cars. I just don't care as long as it's economic and gets me where I want to go. Manual transmission is better to learn on because it then means you're licensed to drive any car essentially.
