Should alcohol be illegal?

What's your guys opinion on this? I mean not for 1 drink, but this is one of the main deaths of Americans (though it is our fault for abusing it I suppose).

 

No, because then you'll have an even worse double-standard with cigarettes for example. And making alcohol illegal won't produce positive results, it's already been done. When there was the prohibition era, it didn't stop drunks from being drunks, it just turned the drunks into criminals. If you make it illegal, it only adds more margin for death with unprofessional and possible criminals producing alcohol with whatever else they wish to add in it.

 

In the US, god no. We saw what happened as a result of the 18th amendment (Prohibition of Alcohol). In that 10-15 year range when alcohol was illegal, crime spiked up near to double the percent it was when it was legal. Too many problems when it was illegal, and that's why it was made legal shortly after.

 

Prohibition was horrible, it started more crime than it stopped.

This. Telling people they can't do something only makes them want to do it. It's true for drugs. Was true for alcohol. Is true for abortion. Is true for parenting. Its just stupid to do it. That and government has no right to be imposing morals on their citizens unless someone's rights are being infringed.

Thats just false. Huge overgeneralization. Its possible to consume alcohol without being an alcoholic. You don't have to get drunk to enjoy drinking.

However, making alcohol illegal would cause money being transferred without government gain, and it would also mean that alcohol would become a center for under-the-table crimes. Also, while the crimes shifted during the Prohibition, the cost of these crimes were, in dollar amount, many more times costly than previously. Because of this, the police force was given a much higher funding in order to keep up with the higher-up crimes. Alcohol was already a huge part of the American life, so as a natural act of equilibrium, gangs formed rapidly, and alcohol was their business.

It should not become illegal whatsoever because of the "shifts in power" that it would cause. However, higher taxes would repress consumption in a "positive" way(limited alcohol consumption due to higher prices, more government gain, simple economics).
Another reason why marijuana should be legal.

Not to mention that alcohol has already picked up too much momentum for it to be banned, that would be idiotic.

I mean like I know it causes lots of deaths and everything but I think more deaths would be caused due to the crime than would be due to the alcohol. Also like drugs now a days people would just add stuff to it and make it even more dangerous .

You can't be like Alcohol is Illegal only if you drink too much of it, but if you have one drink its fine. The US legal system doesn't work like that. Alcohol being illegal would just cause more arrests and stress on the prison system, as well as cause more crime. So NO alcohol should be legal.

 

No, the only bad thing from it is a hang over. Whatever you do on it is your own fault. Handle your drink and have a good time and there will be no regrets.
