    RuneScape Account Recovery Procedure

Currently there is a back and forward discussion in the staff lounge about how to deal with recovery procedures on RuneScape accounts. We can't seem to fully agree on the fairest way to conduct these cases. So we're asking you for your input.

What I've seen carried out on my time on Sythe is, generally:

User A is the original owner. User A sells to user B. User B sells to user C.
User C posts a scam report because the account was recovered. User B is banned and has to refund user C.
User B reports User A with proof he bought it from them, User A is banned and owes User B.
This is normally the case because it's very hard to recover an account if you aren't the original owner. Therefore it's logical to assume that User B doesn't have the account, but User A does.

So, my question to you is:

    • How should account recoveries be dealt with when the user isn't the original owner for the fairest outcome?
    • Should the re-seller take the risk of the account being recovered since they are using their reputation to sell the product?
    • What proof would you say solidly proved an account was recovered?

Yeah, reseller should be held responsible, since it'd be too easy to just buy accounts for close to zero value and resell them without any risk, some would definitely abuse it too by saying they arent original owners
Regarding proof, the best would be account is locked screen and seller not responding to buyer

    The best would be :
    Person a sells acc
    person b is 1st buyer
    person c is 2nd buyer
    A sells account to B
    B sells account to C

    C loses access to account
B is responsible to get original owner to recover it, else - refund
Person a gets banned for recovering account until he refunds person B

The reseller should be held completely responsible for any loss of the account. By selling it, they are stating full ownership of the account pre-sale and thus are responsible for any post-sale disputes.

What about locked accounts? Now anyone with a fair knowledge of runescape account sales knows that sometimes instead of banning your account, jagex simply locks the account and it's not recoverable at all, even if you're the original owner (happened to me twice).

Now. Person A sells the person B an account, the account gets locked and person A proves that they're unable to recover the account, what should be done in this situation?

What I think should be done is Person A owes Person B a partial refund for the locked account (if they have proof that their appeals are being denied through screen share/w mods) + Person B gets to keep the account forever, so they can check the account from time to time, so if Person A changes the password or the account somehow gets unlocked, person B can easily prove that and person A will be at fault.

    Thoughts?

The key word here is "assume".

The only way I've ever handled these cases, unless there was some other evidence to prove somebody guilty, is to make User A recover the account for User C. If the account cannot be recovered by User A, it is therefore his responsibility to refund either User B or C, depending on the circumstances, although it is almost always best for them to refund User C.

If the original owner cannot recover the account, it therefore was not secure and should not have even been sold, unless the buyer(s) were notified before the sale. If the buyer(s) were aware that the account was insecure/unrecoverable by the seller for any reason, the report should be closed with no further action taken (case by case basis of course).

In my opinion the reseller should take full responsibility for what happens with the account after he sold it. However the original owner should try to recover it, but in no way should the original owner be banned for it.
I've sold a few accounts, I'd really be pissed off if I get banned because it was later on recovered from someone else. And for every one of my sales I gave the buyer all the info I had about the account. One of them even succesfully recovered the acc after it got locked due to a major IP change, with the info I gave. And he stated he moved house in the recovery.
Is it 100% sure that they still think I am the original owner now ? Or is there a chance that he would be able to recover it and not me ?

There's many complications that can come up with the account re selling, so the reseller should know the risks of reselling and be responsible for it.

Does anyone have experience of someone other than the original owner recovering an account? I personally have never heard of it happening.

The concern here is that user B makes a habit of recovering the account knowing User A will be held responsible, in the meantime it could be re-sold meaning User A, in recovering, is now scamming user D.

I once bought a pure, the original owner got it locked and I was able to get it unlocked and take all my gear/cash away from the account. Then he got it locked again and recovered it himself. It's possible to get an account unlocked based on that but idk if it's possible to get an account locked if you are not the original owner. I'd assume it is if you have enough info and it's not being played by the original owner.

Wouldn't it just be easier to disallow the re-selling of accounts? If you aren't the original owner then you shouldn't be allowed to sell the account. If this isn't something you'd want to do then wash your hands of account resales and make it YMMV and buy at your own risk etc etc.

It happens all the time. Original owners of accounts get Dox'd and then the hackers use the info to social engineer jagex support. There are websites set up for these hackers to brag about their "loots" when they clean the accs.

It has never happened to me, but it has happened to friends of mine, and even happened to big runescape youtubers too in the past.

It doesn't work anymore. The most they can do with that information is get the account locked. They go by ip addresses now.

Both the original owner and account reseller should be held accountable in the event a recovery happens.

    A - Original owner
    B - Account reseller
    C - Victim

If B resells the account originally owned by A to C, and the account gets recovered, B owes C the amount payed for the account, and if B can prove that there is an A and tie A to being the original owner, then A owes B the amount B bought the account for. B cannot recover the account, but should not use that to their advantage. The risk is much higher when you're reselling an account, and the account reseller should be held liable because of that.

There is no accurate way to determine what actually happened (regarding recoveries), unfortunately. I find it hard to believe that someone would fabricate an account being recovered. That being said, all cases should be taken seriously until proven false when the dispute develops.

    Just my opinion yo

After A sells account to B, A is responsible for the account.
B now resells to C, only B should be held responsible.

There's no reason why A should be held responsible after the account has switched hands. A has no control, and has no idea who the actual owner is anymore.

I don't understand how others feel different about this subject. It's common sense and in more ways fair this way. If someone wants to resell an account, then do so, but the reseller should be held reliable for any mishaps, unless stated otherwise in the thread.

But then when B refunds C, should A refund B if B says A recovered it?

Also, nobody's really touched on the amount of proof you would say is proof it was recovered. To me, a simple lock screen could be taken from anywhere.

To be honest what you are saying does not make sense. I saw scrap all of this and on account sales you must use a trusted mm and do recovery tests before selling the account that way when User A sells to User B if User A recovers the account User B should just recover back and also meaning that when User B re sells account if it gets recovered its on him to get it back for Use C provided that he also hasn't done a recovery test.. If you don't know what a recovery test is don't reply to my post as u may be mentally challenged.

There's going to be no right answer for this question. But the suggestion he gave is the best possible solution for this issue.

If person b is not sure that he can recover the account he shouldn't sell it. I know person a could recover at any time but that's the danger of account reselling

There are some differing opinions, but after reading them I don't think that person A, the orig owner, should be given a free pass if B sells to C and it is recovered. If this were the case then A could just wait until the account was resold and then recover it with no liability. Person A should at a minimum be required to recover the account and restore it to whoever bought it. I've never heard an original owner not be able to do this, so this shouldn't be an issue. If person A isn't able to recover it, ban A because he recovered the account. If person A can recover the account and return it to C, then ban B since this shows that B recovered it. Of course this would require lots of proof and isn't simple. The only difficulty in this scenario is if A gave B the wrong info. I'll have to think about that one

In terms of proof of recovery. There is often an email that jagex sends you if your recovery is denied as well as what information was incorrect (I think).
