I think it's more reasonable for the new user who didn't take a simple safety precaution to burden the cost of the scam rather than the user who's Skype was compromised -- it's always been this way.

Maybe an announcement could be pinned to always ask for a PM when conducting a trade to encourage new users to follow proper trading practices.

I believe the compromise would be if your skype has been hacked before, going forward you would be held responsible. It happening multiple times when you now know you're a target is irresponsible. Aka bus, pinkgaga, pretty much all the gold sellers on sythe tbh.

I think it should be [remain?] on a case by case basis.

Should be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Obviously if someone is being shady and refusing to PM you, report that user if the Skypes line up. I don't think there should be rules that are set in stone on this topic since some crazy shit has happened in the past, and could possibly happen again in the future.

The best we can do is make sure we secure our accounts by enabling 2fa on everything. It's up to us who know better to always require PM's from people we do business with in hopes that they also pick up the habit, helping them from being scammed in the future as well. I am in full support of having a Sticky somewhere, or adding it into the rules or a PM that every new member receives.

The safest way of trading is to confirm the identity of the other user with a PM like this and that habit should extend past just MM's and people trying to apply for OMM.

Honestly I do not see how many many people get scammed due to not simply sending a PM to the user they are trading with. Literally takes acouple of seconds out of your time to send a PM. Pure stupidity if you ask me.

I don't think that's really an excuse, there's so many resources on safe trading practices if somebody decides to ignore them then its on them to take the liability if they're scammed.

If you want to promote better habits for new members then a collection of safe trading practices and market tools should be above the market section not below it (http://www.sythe.org/suggestions/1825479-market-tools-above-market.html).

Below are some posts on responsibility:

    http://www.sythe.org/sythe-org-support/1735064-hacked-msns-skypes-youre-responsible.html

    http://www.sythe.org/sythe-org-news/1549957-regards-skype-hackings.html

Why not just make something like this: http://www.sythe.org/sythe-org-news/1596689-prevent-scams-request-proper-pms-before-trading.html visible in each of the trading sections?

If the people you entrust with the security of your Skype account can't even protect it, why should you be liable when all a hacker needs to do is socially engineer the people working to protect your very account, as mentioned above. If we cannot trust Skype themselves, we cannot be held liable for their incompetence. Unless Richard decides to create a two-factored third party chat client pertinent to the website itself, there is no other way of ensuring that someone is never going to get hacked.

This is the only point that needs to me made and held. It's as simple as that.

Skype social engineering is honestly a joke, the support team for skype is ridiculously unprofessional or un-aware 85% of the time. You can get hacked easily regardless if you have 2FA or not. 99% of Skype hackings happen via social engineering. The best way to make sure your skype account doesn't get hacked would be through contacting Skype and making them flag your account for any recovery attempts. If you're 2FA it doesn't make a difference, just an add-on of a few social engineering sentences. I think the PM system is fine, it shouldn't be a set in stone rule, but it should definitely be made aware amongst the community, as it already is. But really I've come to realize how weak the Skype support system is, and how quickly they'll give up Skype accounts to social engineers.

Could this be done? Seems like a simple fix to give new users a reminder to ask for a PM.

Maybe have a PM warning pop up the first post a newcomer makes in any market related section? I'm not sure if that is possible but feel like that would get anyone's attention.

The ruling on this is being discussed in the SL atm. We've basically decided on it. I assume it will be made public soon.

I didn't know about the Skype staff guy but I always hated this rule because its a free pass for scamming. It's absolutely ridiculous.
