XenForo has quite a good database converter and quite decent support should you encounter any issues, plus most of the 'addons to vb' that Sythe has are easily recreated.

There are many plugins that you don't even know exist and will never know exist. Hell I doubt most of the staff knows about a lot of them.

I also guarantee that it would not take thousands of hours to replace any plugins lost that are not already in existence for MyBB

Just pointing out that with this thread, the answer of why sythe would always use vb was along the lines of 'I paid for it once, nobody wastes cash buying something and upgrading it, you're such a child'.

I don't think that's the case. Licensing cost is minimal and I would happily donate if that were the case but vBulletin was used because at the time it was the most appropriate and stable software. It's lost that title, however, but switching to another forum software for something of this size is a pain so our best option is still vBulletin. However, Sythe doesn't feel comfortable with the upgrade for whatever reasons he has, although I disagree.

I believe this is a lie and I have no problem stating it. The "legitimate reason" that sythe is the way it is, is because of your (singular) fucked up SEO complex...

SEO is what keeps Sythe alive so although I think you're just some sort of conspiracy theorist, I wouldn't even mind an "SEO complex" because as a site owner it's Sythe's job to make sure the website doesn't die and the first step is SEO. What I was trying to address with my suggestions was retaining members and activity. I consider that the second step to having an active community. I'm not happy with the "eventually" response as that could mean another 9 years but I'm not going to start talking shit about SEO being supposedly unimportant.

Xenforo has my eye for a potential upgrade down the line.

Issues around maintaining look and feel will be paramount as well as porting custom functionality. One of the main reasons we never went to vbulletin 4 despite buying it and porting most of our custom code (at one point) is that we couldn't port our look and feel. If this site were to be replaced with an out of the box boring looking white-space forum I do not think we would survive.

Vbulletin 4 also happened to be about three times slower, extremely buggy and insecure and generally just hard to work with.

Yea I agree. Thats why I use them only for business. But even with business, I just love the look and feeling of Sythe. Feels more like a community.

I'd agree the software is ancient. While I prefer vB 3.6.1 to SOME of the newer versions, it's so advanced at this point that an upgrade would do the site some good.

Personally, IPB is what I prefer in terms of useability as well as functionality, but obviously we're not going to switch from vB to that, too many complications. I do agree with an upgrade, though. If not an upgrade, at least these crucial additions to this version of vB (if that is at all possible).

Yeah SuF you are being pretty abusive about this. I certainly agree with a number of points you raise but you have to remember other users aren't savvy about the technical details of software development.

Xenforo has to be the smoothest user experience of any forum software suite I've encountered, and it has a fair bit out of the box.

I only got ranty because this guy is a passive aggressive lying little shit. He just made something up about the nature of the thread he linked. He asks leading questions and attacks the responses. I tell him he is obviously wrong and he just tells me that I have an attitude and didn't read the thread since I called him out on his obvious lies about what actually happened in that thread. I think we can all agree sythe is beyond out dated, if given a good marketplace forum style these forums could thrive even more than they do

 

We have provisioned a development server and purchased a xen foro license. We will be researching a conversion over the coming months. For all the reasons discussed in this thread it will take time.

 

The software on the forum is ancient. I know there's downsides to upgrading for a message board this large but there's some absolutely crucial features that this software is missing that are extremely helpful when used on other websites. I personally do not use Sythe anymore as many members because it lacks features that makes other websites enjoyable to use. At the very least, look into a major upgrade of systems if you're not going to ever update it.

1. Tagging someone in a post
   A lot of different message boards have the ability to do something such as @Grave and it will notify that person they're mentioned. This will then guarantee a response across the entire board
2. Notifications
   It's nice to know when someone's posted on your thread without having to "subscribe" to it. Also, it'd be nice to be notified of someone replying for a duration of time to keep a thread active.
3. Nesting comments/replying to a comment
   Let's discussions happen on a comment without spamming the entire thread. And then there wouldn't be people bitching to stay on topic.
4. Mobile experience
   The website is absolutely horrendous to use, whether you're on the mobile theme or not. It's just not something I even begin to think about because of the way it is currently.
5. Communication
   We should be able to create better notifications for private messages, adding multiple people to private messages, and pretty much having a way to communicate easily; SytheChat was a good attempt but failed
6. Better bumping
   The current bump system works okay for market threads but it's terrible for every other situation. There should be different ways of promoting threads to get people's attention and keeping active or useful threads on top such as a voting system; this should be at the very least an optional method of viewing the forums. The current highest-views method of sorting them is not a great option
7. Moderation
   New software has its advantages for the staff too. The mod queue wouldn't be so long if it was easier to do and took less time.
8. Topic Preview
   Navigating through the forums quickly is key. Users shouldn't have to rely on just the titles to get a snippet other than hover hover hover to see if it's what they're looking for
9. Search
   The current search system is abysmal at best. It's the worst on any website I've ever seen. When we have to resort to Google search to find links on Sythe, that tells you something
10. Attracting new users
    With the way the software is, how it's displayed on a growing number of mobile users, and everyone else but us moving forward, it's hard to attract anyone to use Sythe. We had to install an external software or do modding to get SEO friendly titles. Everything just looks like a wall of text everywhere. The registration page looks like this instead of this
