Good point, but some people just like asking questions. It's like those kinds of math that you learn in school that have no realistic applications but still get your mind thinking more efficiently.

People spend too much time just asking and not enough time answering.

Your statement doesn't really belong in this section. Try spam or off topic?

I mean just on its face, the statement is incorrect. Philosophy is about what is (metaphysics), what might be (reason), and what should be (ethics).

Philosophy is just the application of reason to any thought or set of ideas. If this notion is silly to you then by definition you have no reason to be in the SFA.

I'm mainly emphasizing this area of philosophy. Too much time spent on what might be, and not enough on what is.

Science is a sub-discipline of philosophy which focuses on what is. Are you saying there are more resources dedicated to other philosophy than to science?

The human mind can go on wondering about what is for eternity, it never ends. Science is limited to us because once you find out something is something, it will be that something and there is no room for "maybe it's something else."

I dislike the concept of philosophy mainly because it is a time waster, i.e. maybe there are aliens and maybe they are this and that. Instead of talking about maybe or what could be, you take what is and study and focus on that.

This is not how science works.

You are making a philosophical argument against philosophy. To be consistent with your position you would have to not post here.

@ The science thing: Once they figured out h2o is h2o, it didn't become something else unless they added something to it.

Philosophy is what structures everything in modern day culture in society, without it there would be no religion, no science and no genuine curiosity about the world around you.

After reading a few threads through on the SFA forums, I've gathered that you're follow the path of Islam (correct me if I'm wrong) and without philosophy, there would be no Islam as people would not think and consider possibilities and think up theories and arguments.

That would be philosophy at it's lowest and it does go on, yes. But philosophy in general consists of opinions that are based around factual information.

Philosophy is the meaning of life. It is the most awesome thing, and most important. I can't explain any better, cos my english isn't good enough for that.

(Okay lol that meanin of life thing was maybe little too much, but still, philosphy is very important thing. you, who say it isn't important 1) don't know bout it 2) you're stupid 3) you just don't seem to care bout it, which is a pity :<)

No, you're saying that it should be the case that people not talk about what should be.

You don't see a contradiction here?

    ...what?

The should be part is based on making conclusions about the unknown based on given facts. I think that that method is probably the most effective in making conclusions...

There is no what if. As sythe said there's What Is (given facts) and What Should Be (events that ought to be coherent with the given facts).

So you're saying that no philosophy is based on what if this or what if that? Everything is based on facts?

Of course that's how an argument begins, then you bring the facts into the argument to see if it's head is still above the water.

You have clearly never taken a course on Philosophy.

If you want a real joke in the name of science in medicine, look at Psychology.

Philosophy has its practical applications, and is even the starting blocks of the Scientific Method which is used to evaluate and place our simplest to our most complex hypothesis, theories and laws. (The first two steps of the Scientific Method could be considered heavy in areas of Philosophy)
