This isn't a really deep sentiment, so sorry for anybody whom's genuinely trying to lend out a helping hand, or other people trying to portray a virtual Oprah or Dr. Phil, but I figured this topic fits the Personal Support section since I personally could use some support.

Basically, last night I got into a fight with my girlfriend - she went out with her friends around 8 o'clock and didn't show up at my house until around 1 in the morning, drunk, so I was pissed. I walked out into the living room and I punched a hole in the wall, like an idiot.. I really didn't mean to do it at all, it was more spur-the-moment, and well I mean we're all humans.. I made a mistake.

My dad's coming to visit tomorrow night from out-of-state and I don't want him to see the hole and ask questions, I'm not violent with my girlfriend at all, I'd never lay a hand on her, but I don't want him to think bad of her or frown on our relationship seeing as how it's the first time he's going to meet her.

I was wondering what's the best way to patch up the hole? I'd say it's about 1 and a half inches in diameter, and really not that deep.. it's in drywall. I was initially going to just put a self-adhesive patch over it and apply Spackle, then sand it down (seeing as how the wall is the same off-shade of white as dry Spackle), but I'm not sure if that will work or not?

Can anybody help? It's much appreciated, my budget is limited to this too - I'm trying to save every penny possible for this 5-day weekend with my girlfriend and my dad to really wow him.

Always,

If you're trying to save money then instead of fixing it, I'd put something over it (a picture, mirror, anything) if it's in an appropriate area.

Just put up a painting or mirror over the hole like RwmRS2 said and patch the hole once your father leaves.

Ok here's the plan. Go to a hardware store nearby and buy the following items:
1. Spackling paste.

2. A putty knife

3. Some fine grit sand paper

Alright so after you have all that, fill the hole with spackling paste. Scrape away any extra using the putty knife. Then leave it for a bit and let it dry. After it's dried, it might not still be filled (it may have shrunk a bit while drying). If that's the case, apply more and wait for it to dry again. When the hole is full and everything is dry, sand it down with the fine grit sand paper.

It won't be free, but it should be very cheap.

Best of luck and have a great time with your girlfriend and her dad.

Btw, I'd love to see some before and after pics

Maybe you can just that you accidently bumped into the wall and made a hole? There's no need to tell him the truth about what happened.

It's a decent-sized hole, so I don't think I can just act like I bumped into it. I'm thinking of trying Pocket's idea as it seems most reasonable with my time frame and current budget.

I was literally going to suggest what Pockets suggested, but not with pictures. I actually work a maintenance job at my internship and can coincide (or vouch) with the products and details he mentioned. If you have the identical paint can or know the specifics of the wall color, go ahead and paint over the patched hole as it will stick out like a sore thumb otherwise.

Depending on how big the hole is you might want to buy a small piece of drywall and cut a piece out, put it in the hole, then spackle it. You keep saying a decent sized hole, so I am guessing it is pretty big.

I mean it's painfully noticeable when I say "decent sized hole". It was like the corner of my right hand that made the contact, I'd say the hole is probably close to 2 inches in diameter. I've helped my grandpa spackle drywall before where we had to cut it out and then replace it, and I just don't have the tools to try that at such short notice.

Also, the wall is really white, so I don't know if I'll have to paint it or not? I don't want to go out and buy paint if I don't have to..

You could always say it saw an accident while moving some furniture.
If not, you could go along with pocket's idea or put some boxes up there to make it look like you were working on something- He'd never see it.
