Dads Going To The Hospital

I dont really need support(I tell myself that), but I thought I'd drop a thread here.


My dad suffers from a variety of back problems(several diseases,compressed disks/nerves etc).


Well,the past 2-3 days his LEG has been killing him(horrible numbing non stop pain), finally he had to do an MRI or w/e to see what was wrong.


The doctor literally told him you need to go to the hospital and receive emergency surgery.


What was wrong you ask? My dad was born with an extra disk in his back so his vertbrae/nerves/disks are compressed(to close together) causing pain.


Well, at age 51 my dad had 2 veterbrae crack/compress until they broke.


The pain in his leg is because when they broke the bone fragment literally got stuck in his legs from the broken lower veterbrae(from what I understand).


So my dad called 3 surgeons every single one told him they cant get him in until monday-wensday.


Whats your thoughts on this situation? My dad will be in eternal agony for a minimum of 3 days because of this :l... Anyone else know a way to possibly help him?(he's on anti inflamatorys & pain meds they arent helping).

I don't understand the health care system your country has (Are you in the States?) but when it's an emergency surgery, it should be done right away because its an emergency. I'm so thankful of living in Canada. I have nothing to suggest other than maybe look at other surgeons? Good luck and sorry to hear.

 

This. I totally agree with this. I'm so thankful of living in Finland.
Finland probably has one of the top 5 best health care systems in the world, and it's FREE.

As DMR said, " but when it's an emergency surgery, it should be done right away because its an emergency." Fuck 'murica. lol.

Also, sad to hear about your dad, and that he has to suffer.
My dad had gallstones, and he was in so much pain, but after 1h of calling to the hospital, he got into a surgery. :--)

 

This won't fix anything. How can you expect someone to even cross their legs let alone do yoga when they have cracked discs?

I think the best thing you can do for your father at this current time is go and be with him. Talk to him, watch your favourite movies together and just comfort him. There isn't really anything you can do to take the pain away as everything has been prescribed already, although, you should go buy him some weed and a pipe so he can get high, that tends to take the edge off.

Let's not sit here and criticise each others health care systems, that's not what he is asking for help with.

 

Just be there for him every step of the way, tell him you love him and that he is a trooper for being so strong.

 

Being totally honest here.

Get him some medical marijuana

It wont take the pain away, but it gets your mind off the pain to focus on other things. Will get him through the 3 days easy.

 

Sorry to hear that.

Get some pain medication, or 'alternative' pain medication. If the pain can be managed then waiting isn't too bad.

Check around the area, if you can drive 1-3 hours to a hospital that will do it sooner that may be a viable option.

 

if he's still in the hospital, see if he can commandeer some fentanyl lollipops or patches (if he's not already on something equally potent). that's an unenviable situation and i'm sorry to hear that he's in it :/

Is he staying at the hospital or at home? Is marijuana legal where you live?

I once got hit by a car and after a good while, when I was still having pain in my leg, I just went to a general health person who suggested I get X-rays, but gave me a prescription for Vicodin to hold me over until I was able to do so - The vikes helped a lot, around here they go for anywhere from $2.50 - $5.00 per pill, so probably not the best thing you can get for him.

Pot is what did the most for me... At times, if I smoked enough, making the pain literally non-existent. I never got an X ray and the pain eventually went away on it's own. My knee still gives out if I'm on it for too long and I fall flat on my face, and I wake up every hour or so at night to move my leg otherwise it gets very stiff.

So, if he's somewhere where he CAN smoke, I'd suggest talking him into it, at the very least, mixing it into his food if he doesn't enjoy inhaling smoke. If he's skeptical or "hates marijuana" like most of the older generation; have him read through some of the break-through studies that've been done lately, might decide to give it a try!

 

My dad still hasent been able to receive surgery/go in, Like I said none of the surgeons can see him until tommorow at the earliest guys.

 

Well, if he only has to wait until tomorrow, he's almost there. If he starts hurting too bad, just assure him that it won't be much longer

 

the best thing you can give him is company, sit with him, talk have a beer together. not only will he be happy but you will too knowing that you at least did something
