The image below is the first logo I've ever sold to a client, a gold seller (I cropped the name for privacy purposes). I really like to make experiments with logos, but always end giving up before getting a good result. But since this one was for something one level above "experiment", I put a lot of dedication on making it.

The main idea for this is to be the letter "R" made in a modern shape and that, of course, resembles to gold (the client asked me to make something around the bases of my current logo). I tried to give some depht to it by, uhn "strategically" (no better word came to my mind, haha) blurring some areas and sharpening others.

I also tried to make it as simple as possible, but keeping a "realistic" look, so that it fits in any background color. This mean no overlayed light effects nor anything of the sort. I also made it keeping in mind that this is for a virtual items shop, not for an actual (IRL) store or something.

I modelled the entire logo in C4D, made customised materials, added omnilights (everywhere as always XD) and rendered. Then I made some color corrections in Gimp by messing around with color balance and curves, overlayed diagonal stripes to add some texture, and voilà.

So, this is the final result. I usually don't make CnC threads, but since this one was the first logo I ever sold, I decided to post here to hear the oppinion of people with more experience than me. =) So, yeah, that's it. Please be harsh with me, I really appreciate when someone points out my weak points in straight. ;)

Oh, and sorry (in advance lol) if I forget about this thread. Sometimes I simply forget that we have graphics forums other than the marketplace. =P

Note to self: I don't do vectors.

It's not a logo to start with.

A logo is an image that will be highly recognizable, simple, and can be used to convey a message and brand. It's too complex to be a logo, to many colors going on, and it's not really memorable. You could use it as header I guess, but if you're going to do a logo stick to simple shapes, limited gradients (for printing reasons), and an image type that can be infinitely resizable and still retain the ability to be recognized. If you shrink that down to 50 x 50 or so you're not going to get any of the features that are one it. It's going to be too small. That is why 90% of all logos are very simple images or words.

Very well stated Nero. If you want to excell in making logos stay away from c4d. Try to get fimiliar with programs such as adobe photoshop and also illustrator. As already stated you want to keep a logo fairly simple because it needs to be recognizable at any size.

I'm no where near any kind of graphics artist (and i'm just leaving feedback by saying this) I don't see at all how this is a logo.

When you think of logos you think of like coke, subway, or some kind of actual image.

To me that just looks like a 3D..THING of art, that was made by an atrist or something...

Don't get me wrong it looks sick as hell, I just don't see a logo at all.

Basically what Nero stated. I really don't take this offensively but it really isn't a logo. Logos need to be simple and recognizable. What you have there is too complex. Stick to the basics when you're going for logos is what I'm trying to say.

Gotcha, thanks for the comments guys. =)

I made it with different colors and effects because this is for a gold trading website. This won't be used for printing, nor in a very small or big size. It will just stay at the top of the website, and be used at most in some kind of ad. The main purpose of this logo isn't to convey an image or brand, but to be used in a gold trading website. This is why I made it this way. =P

I know the "standard" says that a logo must be a simple vector image, and that a lot of people think a logo Must be a vector image. But since this one is going to be used only virtually, I saw no need to keep stickied to those standards. And the client requested me to make it this way anyway, haha. XD

But if I may ask: looking at this as a header image (foget the word "logo" =P), how is it looking?

Confusing terminology is a bad thing and sets you off on a bad pathway when talking to customers. You should read up on branding, logos, and business related graphic design if you're interested in doing anything in the graphic design field because you have to be clear with customers so that it doesn't cause confusion. Confusion is a bad thing in the graphic design business. You're making a header for a website.

A header is just an image that informs you what the website is.

Now that we got that cleared up. I don't like it. It doesn't really pass as an R. It looks like an abstract shape and it looks more like brass than it does gold. Turn up the luster on the material if you want it to look more like gold and pull out some of the brown color moving more towards yellow.

That is a logo. Different from what the current "standard" implies and maybe not-so-efficient on its purpose, but still a logo. That isn't an actuall header, I just asked to consider that as a header image because I want you guys to give criticism in that as being an image, not a "logo", since we was going to fall in the loop of "what is standard and what isn't". Just because that isn't a vector and isn't simple, it doesn't mean that isn't a logo. It's just different from what you are used to see around.

Thanks for the suggestion, Emperor_Nero. Will play more with luminances and specular colors next time to make it look more like gold. I actually tried making the brown shades more yellow, but the entire image lost its depht. =P

About it looking like an abstract shape, that's the idea. An abstract image that resembles to a "R", not the opposite. I used the same concept as in my current logo (look at my avatar), which is an astract shape with the letters "DSC" in there.

When you do work for real world clients, and not kids on the internet, you can't do that though. You can't step away from 'what is and isn't standard' and trying to make something completely out of the way of what is a logo. That is what I am trying to get across. I am just trying to help, and it isn't because it is different or not what I am used to. You don't see any fortune 500 company, or even small businesses with any business sense with C4D renders calling them logos. You can be different and still make it to where the image is ingenious. The reason you don't see people with C4D logos is because they don't look good as a logo because you can't shrink them down to icon size, and you can't scale them up infinitely and still retain the brand messaging. But we can agree to disagree.

From a more reasonable, not annoyingly over-analytical perspective, the style is super unique, the R looks great, and the colors go well.

I'm lovin it bro. Don't worry about terminology so much as it's what the client wants lol. You're goin places babe ;0

Emperor_Nero: It's okay man, no need to get mad for this. I understand your point, and I know there are divergences about our oppinions. That logo isn't for a real-life business, that's just for a guy who is going to run a website where he buys and sells gold. He asked me to make it that way and liked the final result. =P

All in all, I opened this thread to get CnC on the overall look of the image, not to discuss if it's a logo or not. I'll be requesting the close of this, since we got too away from the original point of this thread.

EDIT (didn't realise Jiwi's post lol):
Jiwi: Thanks for commenting, much appreciated. =)
