?

Is it legal for them to take the cell phone then charge a ransom?

These people have too much power.. To be honest, you dont need it in school anyway..

I used to carry mine around all the time and was surprised when they took it off me.. I just feel silly now..

But charging for it does cross a line. If i where you i would just lay low, most teachers arnt payed enough to care (In England at least), so unless your waving it around like a jerkoff you won't have a problem.

I don't see how taking someones phone would be any different than destroying it. Either way they cant get it back.

Well if schools made you pay money to have your phone back or sell it thats stealing?? Also I think schools shouldn't be allowed to go through the students phone. In my school if you get your phone taken the principle will go through your phone and look at your pictures/videos/text messages. If there is any nude pictures/videos/or texts you get severly punished. And if they know who you were texting they will suspend that person also and take their phone if they have it. It is bullshit. That your is personal life and schools shouldnt go through it and be able to suspend you. and that is complete bull shit if you have to pay to get your phone back.

A teacher saw me using my phone last week. She asked for it and I told her "No its my phone, Ill put it away now." She said "Give it to me now or be sent to the office." So i just walked out of class and went to the lunchroom to hang out with my friends then went about the day as normal. They called me down like 2 days later and I got two detention. They asked my why I didn't give her my phone I told them because she has no right to take my phone. They told me in school I have no rights and they can do whatever they want. (But in a more modest fashion.)

It's not just selling stolen goods, what if the phone is on a contract? You now have a stolen phone, with a contract attached to it; anyone can text/phone anyone ANYWHERE, and the student, or his/her parents would get billed for it.
