Is the english language being ruined?

Of course most of us aren't being affected. We didn't speak 1337-speak when we were, but CHILDREN today are. My cousin and his friends were using text/internet speak through their cell phones. He says most of the people in his school spell like that.

Like I said, it doesn't hurt us (from age 13-25 - however old sythe users are). The young children are being told "2 spe4k lik dis cuz i speak lik dis on myspase".

I'm probably over reacting, but I can probably tell for sure that the younger kids are going to use it more than we use it, even though we use the internet more than they do.

Yeah, same here. I live in New Mexico and doing anything the proper way is considered white and that's not cool. What kind of a sick world do we live in? If I accuse them racist for it, they'll deny it because if you make fun of whites it's not racist.

People that tend to text and use myspace .. tend to forget how to actually spell things...

The language might be splitting into two. As languages typically do when they are carried by two segments of the population, one of which is all but illiterate.

But do you think you would write on an essay in what used to be known as proper English (I.e. 'The Queen's English') or would you write in what is considered to be current/international English, or yet another variation, casual English?

If you read something published a few hundred years ago you will quickly realize the differences.

Public schools : Functional literacy rate of graduates is something like 15%. But until people figure out that evil begets evil, such shall continue.

No modern language today is the same as when it was created. Simple as that. When you say "ruined" that is a matter of opinion, opinion can't be successfully debated.

Is the english language being ruined?

People today talk with slang all the time and on the internet with "shortened text". Children today that are now growing up with computers are becoming more exposed to this inaccurate way of speach and it will most likely evolve the english language as childhood is the time of the human minds greatest expansion.

It does matter because I could spend 5-10 mins trying to understand a text when I could have just read it and been done with it. I'm a minority and most of the people who are minorities speak like retards and everyone is cool with it. In class once some guy spoke an essay replacing the word you with ''u'' and I with ''i'' as if he forgotten what he learned in school.

Is the english language being ruined?

It's evolving, formal English is still used but people have adapted to be more concise. When schools stop teaching formal English, and start teaching slang and abbreviation thats when it becomes ruined.

Is the english language being ruined?

No it's being ruined whether it's being taught in the classroom or not. Some people just think well i can do it this time or maybe this time but that one time will turn into a whole bunch of times. No one likes to read that crap other than people who type that way.

With that attitude you end up looking like an ass for saying well it's only the internet. When people ball bash you all day or dismiss anything you say cause the way you type then you will understand.
