Increase the file size for avatars

A while ago, the maximum size that donors were allowed to upload themselves was fixed to permit the use of up to 150x100 pixels, however the file size 64 kb remained the same. Because of this, only still images were generally allowed to be uploaded through this method, thus having to use the avatar request thread in the donor lounge for gifs of 150x100 pixels or less. I'm asking to have the kb increased to a reasonable amount to accommodate the pixel size, say 150? Should be an easy job.

 

Completely support. I have yet to update my avatar size. Iv seen people post in the avatar request thread and it take a week or more for a mod to get to it. Yes its not a huge deal to have to post in the thread with your upload link and wait 2-7 days for the avatar to get uploaded but it would save staff some time. The only thing is I imagine that the staff has already thought about this otherwise they would of already done it. Which 9 times out of 10 means they have a reason not to change it.

 

It's not really a matter of not having to wait more than it is accommodating the increase in size.

I believe non donors have the max size upload of 80x80, and 64 kb as well. The length and width was increased for donors, but the file size was left alone. I don't think it was intentional so that's why I made the suggestion. ^_^

 

I think leaving the file size alone was intentional. The reasoning for the size increase of the avatars was that aethestically it didn't make it look bad but I don't think they wanted any additional server impact.

 

Donors were always capable of uploading 150x100 avatars themselves. There was a problem that didn't allow such thing, despite what the note said in the avatar editor. Not too long ago, this problem was fixed. I've never seen anyone complain about file size, it was always about the height and width. This could've been why the file size was untouched.

If it does cause significant server stress, can someone educate me on why? I never understood why signatures could hold 10x the file size of an avatar without any mention of causing any server stress.

And honestly why can't we just upload our own dang avatars?

I don't see any reason why we are required to have our avatars accepted, maybe it's because of the 150x150 limit?

 

It may be because the server stress from uploading avatars conventionally is greater than manually applying them.

 

Support. It would be so much nicer to be able to do it yourself, I mean I bet it's annoying for those people who send in their avatar and then so easily regrets and wants a new one and they will have to wait an week or so before it gets changed.

Use this. It will lower the size of the file, retain transparency, and doesn't affect quality.

Support, doubt it'll have any impact on the servers.

 

Support simply for the reason it will cut down on the posts in the Avatar Request Thread, which in the end is just another trivial task for staff to spend time on.

 

yes i would actually love this. I recently tried to add a gif avatar but it was not accepting it.
