How to dual boot
NOTE: Before starting, you will need to have the original FULL version CDs of Windows 98, Windows XP and a Windows 98 Startup/Boot disk.

Summary - Dual booting is having two (maybe more) Operating Sytems that could run on one machine/computer. For example, I will be using Windows 98SE and Windows XP (but you may use any other Windows OS if you wish) as my two OS to dual boot with. I will have setups: 1. The first one is with a new hard drive that has no data on it. 2. The second one is with Windows 98 installed already. After we are finished setting everything up, you should be able to select which OS you want to use whenever you startup.

Dual Booting on a new hard drive

This is the probably the best way to create a dual booting computer. By new hard drive, I mean you could either buy a new hard drive or format/erase your current one and create the dual boot there.

1.) The first thing you need to do is partition your hard drive using fdisk. Create at least one for Windows 98 and one for Windows XP. You may create more for other data if you want, otherwise just split it into two parts (I would make the XP partition a little larger than the 98 one). When in fdisk make sure that you set the active partition (I think it's option number 2) to the C: drive (Windows 98 partition) if it isn't there already.

2.) The next step is to format (just follow steps 1 -3 for now) the hard drive. You may also format the hard drive when you are using the fdisk command. There should be an option listed in fdisk to format it. You may use the format guide to install Windows 98.

3.) After Windows 98 is finished installing and you could login, you should be able to see another drive in My Computer. Put in the XP CD and it should autoload. When the dialog box comes up, choose to have a New Installation (Advanced). You will be presented with a screen for the license agreeement for XP and product key. There will be a window that will have a button for Advanced Options. Click on it and choose I want to choose the install drive letter and partition during setup.

4.) Check to see if all the settings are correct for the time zone and language.

5.) Press Enter to begin setup. You will see the partition that are available to install XP on. Go to the empty partition that you created for XP and choose the last option to leave the partition unchanged. The installation should begin now.

6.) After XP has finished copying the files, it should restart by itself and show a menu with the option of using either Windows 98 or Windows XP. It should go back to the installation after a moment since it's still not finished setting itself up yet. Enter the Regional Options and Language Settings and select the personal details, the Administrator password and make sure the time and date are correct. If you want to set up any networks you may also configure them here.

7.) After XP has finished its installation you should be able to choose between using Windows 98 or Windows XP.

Dual Booting on an existing Windows' hard drive

1. Before attempting to do anything else, make sure that you have an empty or extra partition to install XP on. If not, you will have to create one. If you don't have a third party software, like Partition Magic, that will create partitions without losing any data, you will have to either buy it or backup all your data and do a clean install. Either way, you will need to have a partition for Windows 98 and Windows XP.

2. Just follow the steps starting from step 3 above.
