Fun Rank Equality

I like this idea. Give it out once every three, six, or even twelve months to a helpful member who deserves it, and I think everybody should be satisfied.

 

If this comes across as complaining, then I have worded my responses wrong. I am not here to whine about not having a fun rank, I just think that the entire community should be sharing in the fun of them.

I had considered coming up with some ideas for people to get ranks, but I decided that posting a thread like this would be the proper first stepping stone to get things in motion.

 

Honestly id love to have one, but i think its good the way it is, mods for a good job and competition winners get to choose which one they get also this has turned into a suggestion more then feedback

 

I'm agreeing with a lot of people on this note, I see what you mean by monthly competitions to win one would be good and a popular addition to the forums, though it does encourage mods to do hard work with a fun reward.

Personally I think it wouldn't hurt to give a couple out to deserved people, though it should be clear to newcomers and etc that this 'fun rank' gives NO extra anti-scam insurance as I'm sure newbies may come to the conclusion they gotten the rank because they're popular and because they're popular they won't scam.

In responce to N4n0's post, maybe there could be hidden tasks created by the admins monthly, for example, biggest post count increase that month (without spamming).
Referrals.
Activeness.
Helpfulness.
And etc.

 

Also wanted to note that non staff members can recieve coding fun ranks (vb, scar, etc).

 

I though they were serious ranks?

If we start giving out more ranks to people then eventually everyone is going to expect to want one. I understand they're just a bit of fun but I think ranks are just better off being earned rather than given out freely.

 

No one has a problem with them being earned, the problem is that it is impossible to earn them unless your staff.

If people just chill out, and look at the fun ranks as just a simple thing to enjoy once and a while, we won't have all of these huge problems everyone is seeming to worry about.

 

It is possible to attain a rank if you aren't staff. If it happens the admins will just get more PMs for people asking for a rank because others have got them.

 

So you're suggesting ranks for major milestones? What other reasons could we give them out for that wouldn't give the implication of favouritism? That idea is a good start.

 

Yes I have 2 theories for how they should be given out.

1. The should just be given out by admins at their own discretion. For example say FireZ sees Sypherz help out a new member, so he thinks, well Im feeling good today so I'll give out a fun rank. That way fun ranks will be considered just a nice little thing to enjoy, but they won't be considered this ultimate symbol of trust and honor that they are considered now which would cause people to whine about wanting their own.

2. They could be given out as milestone achievements such as 5k posts, 10k posts, or something similar. Now some people will say it will cause spamming, but obviously if someone spams they will be infracted and eventually banned which makes it a redundant point.

 

I like the second idea the first idea in my opinion adds too much favouritism and is in most cases seen by the community as favouritism, most people will see it as he did something so if I do it I will be equally rewarded but if they aren't they will see it as he is favoured more than I am even though it might not be favouritism it will definitely be seen as it.

 

1. It's likely favouritism will be involved.

2. You can still spam but appear not to be, just kind of over post in threads that your post seems relevant but you're just posting to get your post count up

 

People do that anyways because they think it will make them more trusted, but think about it, how many of them even make it to 5k let alone 10k.

 

The shitstorm that was created when BMTH received the Cracker rank from Pen was something I never want to see again - not to mention he was given the cold shoulder for a long while by the community for having it (before his ban of course).

BMTH helped out Pen with some things, got the "fun" rank, favoritism raging threads and abuse followed. It may seem nice for Administrators to hand them out to people just for fun, and you may be able to speak for yourself when you say that noone will make a fuss over it - but they will, and we can't control the masses.
It's the very reason as to why Nick, Giverny, and JT don't have rank application powers - Matthew/Richard saw a problem with it all and decided that they needed to be much stricter towards giving them out.


Competitions and Milestones seem to be the only plausible options for giving out Fun ranks.

It's basically like staff promotions; 60% supermajority, etc.

I guess the main problem is while you say that we're over thinking it, and they're just "fun" ranks, it's not seen that way by the majority of this site and probably never will be.

Over the years they've been warped by the community into not fun ranks, but marks of superiority, power, and trust. While this was never the intentions of the ranks, voting for a member or awarding them gives the appearance to many that we favor a particular member over others - that we see them as more important, more valued. It will create an unintentional social hierarchy....

Awarding them in a way where EVERYONE has an equal chance is the only way to do it all without creating an uproar these days.
