once you get into higher level math you will need to use simplified radicals, so they teach you know so you can apply them later on.

The point of school is to learn, and what do you honestly learn when you use your calculator?

They tell you to show work so that you can prove that you actually learned the subject, and not how to use a calculator.

My rage has already been directed at other poor habits of teachers.

 

Before being so critical of teachers, why don't you try to understand their situation more? They're underpaid, they have to constantly deal with immature students, and they have different methods of teaching. Show some respect before you patronize and try to comprehend what they are doing and why they are doing it.

just the opposite at my school.

teachers encourage computers, ipods, as long as we are paying attention.
one of my AP teachers doesn't even care what we're doing on our laptops as long as we treat each other + him with respect and contribute to the class.
