Enforced Uniform

A dress code has nothing to do with someone's stomach showing. You mean having a shirt which is suitable enough in length to prevent the stomach from being revealed?

Do you wear school uniform 365.5 days a year? No. Your argument is redundant.

Are you being forced to buy these clothes? No. Your argument is invalid.
1. Yes I meant having a shirt which is suitable enough in length to prevent the stomach from being revealed? Sorry I couldn't find a way to phrase that as nice as you did.

2. What I meant is wearing the exact same school uniform OBJECT for over 200 days. If you buy only one uniform, and you have to wear a uniform every day, You have to wear the same uniform every day.

3.When I went to a uniformed school, I had to buy the uniforms...

The fashion season comment is a bit redundant, I agree.

What I meant by my final comment was targeted at the fashion season comment, not at school uniform. Obviously you have to buy school uniform.

1. So? That doesn't mean you're late to school? Also, uniforms will cut that down.
2. It's easier to enforce a dress code, like Gurtaton said.
3. Wow, you shouldn't change yourself just to make others like you... it's pathetic. People should like you for who you are, not who you're not...
4. Oh, sure, buy one or two more extra pairs, it's not that expensive anyway. Besides, I'm sure buying MORE sets of regular clothing isn't as expensive as that... (Sarcasm)
Gah. I hate it when people reply to me while I'm answering someone else.

1. Uniforms may cut that down, but I still claim that anybody who wants to spend an hour finding what clothes to wear needs to plan for that

2. I like dress codes too.

3. People SHOULD like you... Except they don't. What you gonna do now? Option one: Be pathetic and get bullied, increasing your patheticness.
Option two: Be pathetic, but, by pretending to fit in, not get bullied.

4. What point is this supposed to convey? If you go to a public school It might be too expensive for the lower class.

1. Yeah, thanks for agreeing with me on the first statement.
2. Umm, that's great.
3. Wow... You would be a horrible Guidance Counselor. Acting like someone you're not is pathetic, but being yourself is not. If you get bullied, get help and inform an adult. Don't try to change yourself, try to find people who have the same interests with you and be friendly with them.
4. I'm sure public schools can help the needed with free uniforms and such.

Ok, I don't mean this to be rude, but have any of you ever actually had to wear a uniform? I have had to since kindergarten (I am in 11th now) and everyone I know including myself despises them. People list all these reasons like...

1. You don't need to worry about you're going to wear.
Honestly picking out a shirt and a t-shirt is just as easy as grabbing a polo shirt and pants in the morning.

2. Cancels out students wearing inappropriate clothing.
This is not true, girls will still find away around. In my experience girls can make a uniform look 10x sluttier than regular clothing. Skirts so far up you can see their underwear, they can still manage to put on the tightest clothes possible, etc. etc.

3. Students wont feel isolated and/or bullied because they're not wearing the latest fashion, or they're not wearing nice clothes, etc.
Although this may be true within the school itself, but when students come in contact with other students or people from outside their school, they are 10x more likely to be bullied by them. I know I had problems with this when I was a little kid, people would constantly pick on me because I was the only kid wearing a uniform. Now that i am older I never have this problem, but back then it was horrible, and many kids had to deal with it. Thats a big problem with uniforms as well, when your a little kid and even when your older they can hurt your self esteem so bad. Uniforms are almost always not flattering to your body, and can make you feel fat or ugly. I personally don't have a problem like that but I used to when i was in middle school, and I see it happen everyday in my school.

4. Prepares them for the future when they need to put on uniforms.
This is somewhat true, but honestly a work uniform is much more widely accepted, and when in an office environment you usually have more freedom on what you want to wear than in a school uniform enviorment.

5. Saves parents money.
This is a very common misconception. You don't just buy one shirt and one pair of pants and your set. You have to buy a shirt for everyday of the week, and enough pants to get you through the week. Then you also have to have extra incase something happens to one of the shirts/pants. Now you are also wearing the same clothes every week, so they wear down much quicker, and don't forget you can outgrow them too. So even though it may appear that your not buying a bunch of clothes from target or whatever, your still paying a shit load for uniform clothing. Oh and in my experience a uniform shirt has cost more than buying a shirt at aeropastel since they have to have the logo of my school and only one place sells them.

6. It helps keeps kids disciplined.
From what I have seen, no it really doesn't, if anything it makes kids worse. Kids are always trying to find ways around the dress code, resulting in punishments from the school. These punishments could easily be avoided if there simply was no uniform. No matter what school you visit kids are going to be getting in the same kind of trouble, but when you add a uniform onto that, they are also getting in trouble for that. In my school the principal is so busy running around yelling at people individually for their uniform that other people can literally do whatever they want. People get away with so much shit because the principal is to preoccupied with enforcing a dress code.

7. It kills people's self esteem
I talked about this earlier, and I would like to harp on it some more. Uniforms ruin your sense of individuality, they can make you feel so plain and boring and useless. It can make people feel like they don't matter in the world, that kid over there looks and acts the same way as me but he is way smarter, so why am I hear? Im just taking up space. When I was going through like 3rd - 8th grade, I was picked on horribly from kids outside of my school. They would always bully me because I wore a uniform and went to a private school. And its not just me this happened to, it happened to many kids who were in the same situation as me. Thankfully when I hit high school, I gained self confidence, I made my uniform work for me, and I gave all the douche bags a "fuck it" attitude. But I still see people in my high school struggle with problems like this. Uniforms can be extremely unflattering, if your not in good shape, it shows, and this makes people feel like crap. People want to be able to express themselves through their clothing, and with a uniform they cannot do that. And the girls who want to look slutty, will still look slutty, there is no way around that. Uniforms aren't going to stop that, so why do we have them?

I have had to wear a uniform my entire life, I know what its like, people can comment on it, but until you have experienced what its like to have a uniform, you can't truly know what its like. Throughout kindergarten - 11 grade, I have yet to see a positive effect that came from uniforms. The only thing I have seen is negative, and I really don't think that they should continue. But hey, the schools aren't going to listen to me. They are going to continue their close minded ways like always.

Oh and wulfy, I didn't mean to attack your post directly, you just had the best list of examples :p

You specifically mentioned America. Anyway, it's your decision if you wanna go to that school or not (unless your parents force you to or something), and I honestly don't see how a uniform could be bothersome.

Its not always your choice. If the public school in your area is the only one to choose, you have to go there.

Perhaps you missed my point. Just because you don't care doesn't mean nobody else cares either.

Many people care. Many people don't.

And how often does this happen? Once you establish it, it'll be extremely rare to see a student come wearing something else. Also, this would make him/her stand out WAY more, because everyone else would be wearing uniforms, thus making him feel uncomfortable.

You are assuming that being different makes people uncomfortable. If you choose to buck the uniform, you obviously do not care about being different and I would even say you want to be different. Once you establish a dress code and enforce it, people will slowly start following it just like they will a uniform.

"Looks can be deceiving," doesn't apply to everyone.

The point is, you can not judge the person by what they look like because they might not be what you think at all. Avoiding people who look different is a stupid idea because maybe some of them will be exactly what you think they are but many if not most will not.

The hell? Absolutely no. Nobody would be saying, "Hey, your clothes suck." As for making fun of other people's faces, NOTHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT THAT, except perhaps doing something ABOUT THE BULLIES.

You missed my point entirely. How you look is based partially on your body and partially what you are wearing. If you look like shit in the uniform and others look good you are still going to be bullied. Bullies are going to bully no matter what you are wearing and at least for some having control of what they look like will make them feel better.
Bring out their inequalities? Please do expand on this.

Be more clear. How exactly does it make it stupid, when you could be blaming the person for being so self conscious about what other people think? It's ridiculous IMO. You can't blame either of them.

^Read above

Actually knowing everyone is going to wear the same thing as you gives confidence to some people. Are you getting to bullying? I'm just saying, some students will always pick on other students no matter what they're wearing. It's not so much about the clothes, it's more about the kids who pick on others insecurities, that will happen with or without the uniform. (But, other students can't say "Hey, your clothes look retarded." Lol)

Some students... Some students feel better when they can choose what to wear themselves. Your logic works both ways.

You're blaming the uniforms for that? It's not the students fault he's sensitive to those types of remarks. The fact is some people take those remarks very seriously, and with the uniform enforced I doubt students will pick on other students for not wearing the latest fashion, not wearing nice clothes, etc.

Yea, instead they would pick on them for just being ugly. Uniforms do nothing to solve the bullying problem, so its a null point.

Okay, than I'm pretty sure some offices would require them to wear uniforms?

McDonald's does.

How long do you think Summer is? It's 2 1/2 months where I am. I doubt people are going to use a differant piece of clothing every single day of summer, I'm sure they'll use multiple combinations, etc.

How often do you do the laundry? I do mine once a week or so, sometimes every two weeks depending on the amount of time I have. I also don't give a shit what I look like and still have a shit ton of cloths that I still fly through. The simple fact is, you still need to have enough cloths so that you have clean cloths everyday. That said, people who care what they look like will want to have more so that they can pick and choose what to wear on a given day. Even though its only two months or three months out of the year, you are still going to need just as many cloths as you would for all year since you don't do laundry every two or three months.

I will try to give an opinion without the use of superfluous language.

I have always gone to schools where uniform is compulsory, although we do have "Home clothes days" every few months, so I will compare my experiences with these rare home clothes days to my experiences with everyday school life.

I find that with non flamboyant uniform, people who are socially timid tend to seem more confident during school days, whilst during home clothes days they seem reluctant in terms of social interaction. I have noticed females tend to have "competitions" with each other as to whom in their opinion has the "best outfit" so to say. However, this trend seems to die out as you age.

They are shy since they are used to wearing a uniform. If they dressed themselves everyday they would be a lot more confident about themselves.

I am currently joining sixth form, where suits of your choice can be worn. For example you will be allowed to wear a pink shirt with a yellow two piece suit and a bow tie if you wish to do so. Wearing a suit in general makes you feel more mature and I think it is a brilliant form of semi-enforced dress code. Many students at my school look up to the sixth formers because they have more freedom in terms of what they wear.

In conclusion, I would highly suggest semi-enforced uniform in the form of more choice to be used in schools. This allows more choice and freedom but at the same time should prevent serious bullying or competitive dressing.

Bullying won't be stopped by a uniform. There's also nothing wrong with competitive dressing. If you don't want to do it, don't.

That's very true. One of the girls I know goes to a Catholic school and they wear uniforms. The skirts are supposed to go down to their hung fingertips. You know what they do? Just buy the smaller size or cut the bottom off of it. How many times will a parent buy a new one before they tell the school to fuck it since there is no way in hell to stop a teenager from wearing what they want.

1) If you read the contents of this thread you would not have to ask this question.

2) A way*

3) Don't create random statistics. Do you have any proof of this? No. Your argument is redundant.

4) You're* You have made this mistake too many times.

5) How can uniforms be flattering to your body? That is the most incoherent sentence I have ever read.

6) Environment*

7) Every day is one word. No you do not have to buy a shirt for every day of the week. You can buy one shirt and wash it every day.

8) Do you have a statistic to prove that kids are getting into the same kind of trouble in every school? You don't, so don't make such fallacious statements.

9) Uniform does not make people feel like they "do not matter in the world"

I am sorry but this is the most cretinous statement I have ever read. You have explained absolutely nothing and given an extreme viewpoint.

10) Why am I here?*

Quality beats quantity, that is all I have to conclude with.

It's a good idea.

If everyone is wearing the same thing then people can focus on learning more instead of what other people are wearing
Its easier to get ready in the morning because you know exactly what you are going to wear.
Makes a school look better and more clean.

I think they're a good idea. It would incite unity, diminish wealth and intelligence gaps that wedge children apart, and eliminate the problem of inappropriate dress in teemagers

That is what people think would happen, but clearly is not. We have to remember that this is still school, a uniform isn't going to bring people together, there will always be different cliques and groups that divide the population of the school. And as for the inappropriate dressing of teenagers, it has been explained in previous posts that this does not happen. They will still dress inappropriately no matter what they are forced to wear.

Tons of people doing it doesn't make it right, or smart.

I can get out of bed and out the door in like 10 minutes without a uniform. Teenagers are not that focused on people's cloths that it is the only thing keeping them from paying attention to learning.

3. Wow... You would be a horrible Guidance Counselor. Acting like someone you're not is pathetic, but being yourself is not. If you get bullied, get help and inform an adult. Don't try to change yourself, try to find people who have the same interests with you and be friendly with them.
3. Again, I have plenty of experience in this type of thing. Adults have a surprising capacity to be total retards when you actually need them, and troll on you when you don't. In all my life, not a single adult has ever helped me with my social problems. So I solve them myself...
Here's a simple question: Which is more pathetic:
A: An unhappy child acting like everybody else and doing OK
B: An unhappy child getting beaten up for not fitting in, and then getting left on the ground to be miserable. Broken nose included.

Communism?

I wouldn't call strict adherence to uniform communism just because that's a very small part of some historic communistic regimes. If that were true, the ballet studio down the street from my house harbors a platoon of tutu-wearing commi-girls.

@x339: I don't see how they can dress inappropriately if their uniform is enforced. I also understand cliques will still form, regardless. However, if you eliminate the difference between a rich boy's name-brand clothes, and a poor boy's patched/off brand rags; that's just one more division taken out between the students. Whether that stops cliques or not, it's still a step in the right direction imo

Because enforcing a dress code to the extent of the rules being followed exactly is nearly impossible. Girls will wear skirts up to their underwear, and that will be punished. But then nearly all the girls will start doing it, and then its nearly impossible to deal with.

So amp up the punishment. I went to Saint Mary's Private Christian's school for 8 years, we never once had a problem with mass rebellion against the school's dress code because no one wanted to get suspended.

Thats exactly it, most schools can't punish the masses because what are you going to do, suspend the whole school? People will always find away around dress codes.

I am for School uniforms, the main reason is because you don't have to think of what to wear next.

Its not always your choice. If the public school in your area is the only one to choose, you have to go there.
A) Move to another area.
B) Get over it and adjust. It's not that hard.
Many people care. Many people don't.

I already know. I'm saying that I would rather not take chances and get my cherry popped.

No. If you wear the same things, nobody can tell you "Your clothes suck," because then you could just say "Likewise." What part of this simple argument do you not understand?

I am not arguing that this will stop bullies. I am arguing that nobody will make fun of your clothes. As far as your looks go, they cannot be changed, so please, for god's sake do not bring this crap up again.
Some students... Some students feel better when they can choose what to wear themselves. Your logic works both ways.
How is this an argument? It's a preference.
Yea, instead they would pick on them for just being ugly. Uniforms do nothing to solve the bullying problem, so its a null point.
Eliminates bullying because of someone's clothes. Again, the aim is reduction of bullying.
They are shy since they are used to wearing a uniform. If they dressed themselves everyday they would be a lot more confident about themselves.
They are shy because they are born shy. One can't get rid of it that easily. Even if they wore daily clothes, they would still feel insecure wondering what others think about him/her. There are better ways to eliminate shyness.
Bullying won't be stopped by a uniform. There's also nothing wrong with competitive dressing. If you don't want to do it, don't.
Reduction.

Nothing wrong? Sorry, but you just promoted bullying with that comment. There is the friendly, and the seriously competitive.

But hey, the schools aren't going to listen to me. They are going to continue their close minded ways like always.

Yes, I have worn a uniform.

1. Point being? The main thing here is we can immediately start dressing up after we take a morning shower.

2. Let me begin by trying to get this word through your head.

Reduction. Reduction. Reduction.

Not every parent will approve of their daughter wearing their skirts so high up, and if they get wind of it, they'll most likely tell her to stop doing it. There will always be sluts. You can't stop it. We are aiming for a REDUCTION.

3. Go home and change.

6. So many "ifs". Perhaps if those lazy students started WEARING proper uniforms, the principal wouldn't need to waste his time, now would he? With a proper enforcement, I'm sure such cases would be rare.

7. Sorry if you suffer from low self-esteem. A lot of people get more confident as they grow up, such as in your case, so it is not an excuse to get rid of uniforms. Rather, you should be thanking it because if you hadn't got bullied, you wouldn't understand, and neither would you be the way you are today.

As for people who want to express themselves, what's the point? They'll just start another dress competition and those with rich clothes will make others feel bad.

Because enforcing a dress code to the extent of the rules being followed exactly is nearly impossible. Girls will wear skirts up to their underwear, and that will be punished. But then nearly all the girls will start doing it, and then its nearly impossible to deal with.

And where did you come up with the assumption that ALL the girls will start doing it? With a proper enforcement, very few will. You cannot totally get rid of something. Ban alcohol, there will still be a few law breakers. The main aim here is; reduction. That is the most we can do given human's nature to break rules.
