This section is pure cancer right now and have been for a long time because the rules doesn't require you to show any proof of owning the gamertag you are selling.
At the moment atleast 80% of the threads are made by scammers and reporting them does nothing because they arent breaking any rules until someone gets scammed.
And even then only the scammed user can report them with proof which doesn't happen that often since most of the users that deal there are newcomers that just quit the site after getting scammed.
I constantly need to post the ''Report a scammer'' section to these scammed users.

[READ BEFORE POSTING TO AVOID BEING PUNISHED] Rules & guidelines!

I think those rules need to be rewritten and there should be a specific moderator for xbox section.

I don't know much about XBOX tags so guess I'll ask.

  • Is it easy to fake proofs of these?
  • how hard is it to obtain this information?

How did you come up with that statistic?
What parameters did you use in your testing?

Suggest what the rules need to be written to.
Also we have games moderators and global moderators which have access to all sections. You are not providing alot of reasoning as to why we should have a moderator specifically for that section alone. I think the issue here is the users who use that forum do not know how to trade safely on the website and thus are getting scammed

Yes its really easy to fake proof. Most of the scammers tell you to add their kik for proof and they only show you screenshot of them signed in on the account what can be easily faked with inspect element.

These are the recent threads. And I know for a fact you will ask me for proof but as I said theres no proof until someone gets scammed and im not willing to give them money to get the proof and them banned because they will just do new accounts after that. Its just so obvious its a scam if they only use middleman with no vouches or add fake middleman in group chat. Also selling high top tier tags for really low prices is obvious scam aswell.

In my opinion you shouldnt be allowed to sell non original tags there but thats just my opinion. No offense to the current market mods but they aren't really clearing xbox section from the scammers for example ths guy
SELLING 3 AND 4 LETTER OG GAMERTAGS
selling really top tier gamertags like bro, feed, mad, kid, sun, man, gold, dad which he claims to own and yeah he shows proof but its only fake screenshot he wont send message from the account to actually proof the ownership. Right now he has 6 threads on the top page which is ridiculous since he doesnt own any of these tags. Hes willing to use middleman but I have contacted him couple times on different kiks and hes only using some random middleman with no vouches to show or hiper imposter.

I think every selling thread should be approved by the xbox moderator and the seller should show proof of owning the tag by sending message from it to prevent faking screenshot. And the thread should specify how many gamertags they are selling and the number of letters their og have. This would decrease the scamming threads significantly.

And yeah its a problem many of the section users are newcomers and doesn't know how to trade safely. They blindly go first to users with no vouches and after getting scammed they doesnt know how to report a scammer so they just leave a scammer comment in the sellers thread which get removed by the scammer because theres no proof.

Proof of ownership in non-RS name sales.

I'm not going to write an elaborate speech about this but you can read my suggestion instead of just making a n ew one, there's a conversation already open about the topic there.

Yeah saw that but the rules page says this
''If a thread hasn't had a post in several weeks or months, do not post in it'' so I thought I make a new thread instead of grave digging. But yeah suggestions section could be different but I'm not sure about that

I'm aware this isn't my thread, but as someone who's traded gamertags for years, I thought I'd offer my input.
I don't know much about XBOX tags so guess I'll ask.

  • Is it easy to fake proofs of these?
  • how hard is it to obtain this information?
Faking proofs is, sadly, incredibly easy as with inspect element you can easily make it appear as if you're signed into the account when you are not. However, an alternative method of providing proof is to ask for a Friend Request, or a message from the account in question as it is much harder to fake a message (if a message was to be faked, it would involve getting the actual owner of the tag to send a message to the buyer).

Another thing to note, is that the main reason proof isn't publicly provided is because Microsoft has become quite vigilant in banning names that are known to be sold. As a result, users have begun to star out letters in the gamertag, and then providing hints to make it harder for the gamertag to be linked to account sales. As a result, requiring picture proof when attempting to sell the account would publicly reveal the gamertag which can result in the account getting banned.

How did you come up with that statistic?
What parameters did you use in your testing?

I haven't ever done anything but sell tags, so I can't say much for the legitimacy of other sellers. But the section always looks shady, I'm unsure if it actually is though. Unlike some of the bigger sections, such as RS Gold sales, or RS Account Sales, things like donation status, account age, vouches, etc. are usually not a big deal for the gamertags section. The section is usually littered with new accounts posting threads, instead of older more trusted sellers getting involved. Not to say that these new accounts aren't legitimate, but it certainly makes the section as a whole look rather sketchy. It doesn't help that users in the gamertags section rarely file scam reports if they're scammed and have a tendency to just post on the thread saying they were scammed, or just quit the site altogether, resulting in very little being done about the scammers.

One thing to note is that unlike RS Trades which usually occur over Skype or Discord, the social medium used for Gamertag sales is usually Kik. I'm unsure if Kik is considered valid proof for scam reports? But it would have to be allowed if you wanted those users to provide scam reports.

Suggest what the rules need to be written to.

That really is the issue, at least from what I've seen. Gamertag trades are incredibly easy to scam if the seller knows what they're doing, and inexperienced users can easily get duped. I'm unsure what the Moderator team could really do. Perhaps have a stickied thread detailing the process for ensuring trying to confirm the seller owns the tag, and proper practices for securing it? I'm unsure if the section warrants it's own Moderator, but it would be a good idea to have someone around that knows a bit about Gamertag sales? As they're a bit different than RS sales.

Yes its really easy to fake proof. Most of the scammers tell you to add their kik for proof and they only show you screenshot of them signed in on the account what can be easily faked with inspect element.
You could probably make things better by asking for a message or a friend request from the account in question? Usually, if someone can't provide that, there's some shady stuff on the go.

In my opinion you shouldnt be allowed to sell non original tags there but thats just my opinion.
I'm unsure why you wouldn't allow that, albeit some of the tags being sold are pretty much worthless, that isn't exactly a scam.
I'm rather biased here, as all I've ever sold was 3 Letters and 3 Characters, never bothered trading original tags.

I think every selling thread should be approved by the xbox moderator and the seller should show proof of owning the tag by sending message from it to prevent faking screenshot. And the thread should specify how many gamertags they are selling and the number of letters their og have. This would decrease the scamming threads significantly.
This is a decent idea actually, as sending a message is one of the few ways to provide any form of verification without a public tag reveal. Sadly, it would require a dedicated mod to the section.

First of all thanks for the detailed post. Appreaciate it :)

Yes I do that every time I deal but sadly them refusing to send friend request or message from the account is not enough proof to get them banned.

I understand selling 3 letters/chars that arent considered og but have some value still but tbh none of the random 4 and 5 letters/chars never sell and in my opinion its just a spam posting at this point. Maybe post in the rules section that tells what name have value and what not would be good aswell like runescape names section have. If they change the rules that you actually need to show proof of owning the tag to a moderator it would just be an extra work for nothing if you have to show proof of owning worthless gamertag but once again thats for the mod to decide.

People need to stop going first to randoms with no vouches or rep! Please use a middle man. Anyone can post fake proof of owning gamertags!

Only solution at this point is have better IP detection and ban VPN that way multis can’t create accounts and just continuously scam.

Until that’s implemented you won’t be able to do anything. There are too many people who are very trusting and go first to fake scammers.

@Hiper what's your opinion on this?

This would simply take too long! It will be very hard to monitor as people can edit post etc.

Will be a lot of work for moderators
Maybe but gamertag section isn't that big compared to rsn section for example. Editing posts would be a problem but surely this would get rid of some scammers because I doubt all of them would go through the hassle of proving ownership of a gamertag to a moderator.

You have any other ideas other than banning vpn since I dont think that will happen?

I think it’s a good suggestion but it will reduce the activity in that section in my opinion which isn’t good for the site

Not sure what the answer is to be honest!

I personally believe VPN should be banned.

This suggestion has been denied.

Would take up an amount of resources for a section that is not particularly active. If this ever becomes a problem, I will refer back to this suggestion.
