I WOULD JUST LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT HALF THE RESPONSES IN THIS THREAD ARE THE TYPICAL RESPONSE YOU WOULD HEAR FROM ANY RUNESCAPE ADDICT WHO HAS NEVER SEEN A BOOK OR A REAL GAME IN THEIR LIFE. PLEASE, IF YOU ARE ON OF THESE PEOPLE, FIRSTLY GO DIE, AND THEN PROCEED TO EDUCATE YOURSELF IN THE WORLD OF FINE GAMING. THAT IS ALL.

I say we do this in a classic way. A lot of the ideas will take a strenuous amount of work to see any form of progress, and it'll only be a fraction of a percentage. If we do a classic style RPG, and turn it into an MMO, then we could have a game up in weeks, maybe a few months.

If any of you have heard of RPG Maker, it's a simple tool used for making single player application games. It has several built in graphics, sounds, items, etc... None of this is permanent, and it can all be edited. If we were to take this application, and make it edit it to be more of what we want, then we add a aspect of online play, it would be much easier than starting from scratch.

We can build on the engine, and alter what is already there. Then we can simply have it connect to the server when a person is ready to play, and instead of running in a browser, it runs on their computer. All the data would be stored in the databases, and only accessible through there. This would also allow for easy editing, fixing, and the like.

Simply put, the easiest, quickest, and probably best way to start out making a game like such.

Here are some screen shots I took of my work in progress... I didn't take any of the menus, but they look a lot like that of possible Final Fantasy, or even Shining Force... Very classic, but effective nonetheless...

Now what would have to be done, is some simple work on the engine to make it so we can edit various aspects. Event folders would have to be made so the switches for each new player can be altered. Different graphics may need submitted, as well as a possibility of full character color changing, editing, etc. Some work to the menus for changing, and several item and creature graphics changed. But as it stands... there's several animations, sounds, graphics, and more in this program...

There's also a script editor that comes with it, I'm pretty sure it's mostly in C, or possibly some PERL. But it's fairly simplistic.

Well, agreed?

I do love RPG Maker as i used to use it for my 'Final Fantasy' styles RPG's.. Now back ontopic. Your idea may or may not work. To be honest most people are looking for the usual 'Real Life' graphics when it will not happen.

I quite like your idea also, its also different and it will make it far more interesting and different game play ideas.

I'm not going to say whether or not i support. But its a good idea..

Is that program capable of handling quests and back stories as such?
I don't think it should be the program used to create a release version of the game. Perhaps just to get all the ideas etc together.

In the words of Sharp Tooth, 10d.

To get a version of the game going where all the ideas are set, and we have a good idea of what we want then maybe.

It can do anything really. It's called events, and it's got all the capabilities of any old style game...

It is a fantastic program :P.

Old style games like "Zelda: a link to the past" were probably the best RPG's ever to be made, I had a dream where I made a 2D game like your suggesting in the rome era - If i knew how to make a MMORPG 2D game I definately would.

Simple is sometiems good, and addictive, people on this thread said that rsc was "shit" - funny how it's actually superior to Rs2 in gameplay - just compare the PVP for starters.
