On a CRT monitor yes it can. It is caused by the monitor being refreshed which gives off a unnoticeable flicker that can damage your eyes.

You can make the refresh rate better on your computer by: right click your desktop properties settings advanced

you can also buy a screen filter that will protect your eyes
    http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/10...lias=aps&field-keywords=screen+filter&x=0&y=0

If you request a screen filter from your employer they legally have to give you one.

yeah straining your eyes alot can effect your vision in long term.

its normally for "older" people (40/50+) and there lazer eye surgery now that can fix it for most people.

ive herd old school computer screens (the 20" thick ones) are alot worse for your eyes then modern lced screens cause of the way the refresh.

it's also genetics and luck - some people could use computer 10 hours a day, everyday for life and never have any problems.

but for everyone who has said, they use computer for X hours a day and have perfect vision, vision deteriates over time.. and most people wont notice any difference in vision for years.

I believe so. Excessive playing can cause a bit of damage to your eyes, I'm sure 1-3 hours a day on the computer can't hurt, but let's say 5-12 hours a day can eventually, overtime, damage your eyes. I don't believe in serious damage, but yes, your vision can get affected negatively.

Looking at a screen doesn't really effect vision at all, playing FPS games actually improves it. If people have glasses, they usually start out with them, I've had 20/15 vision since I was young and I use the computer over 10 hours a day and still have 20/15 vision.

As a kid, my vision got bad (didnt play games), now i spend about 4+ hours on the computer, and it hasnt gotten any worse...
CRTs ARE bad for your eyes since they flicker, and forcing your eyes to focus on the constant flickering can cause damage after about an hour.
LCDs on the other hand, dont flicker, dont emit radiation, their fine, sit there all day :)

Well do you stay on for a long time, or do you put your face like 5 inches from the screen? If not, you don't have a problem.

It all has to do with genetics too. I spend alot of time on the computer. There's really nothing else to do, other than watch T.V. and I like the computer more. My vision is 20/20.
