I've heard the Wacom Bamboo is the best I can buy but what does it have over an iPad etc?

From what I've seen the Wacom Bamboo is only for drawing/painting meaning that it doesn't have the apps and what-not that iPad does, is this true?

Keen to get a tablet after exams.

I don't really think an Ipad is made for drawing/painting.

The iPad is an all round device,

Personally I don't use it to draw but my brother is currently doing A level art and he loves it!
He uses it for most of his drawings

    iPads suck balls for art.

I'd say the best are the Cintiqs but I don't think you're going to drop $2,500 on a tablet.

If you're going for a wacom, I would go with either an intuos 4 or 5. I've heard good things about intuos, from photo manipulators to digital painters.
Also the wacom intuos (and I think most tablets) don't have a directly view-able screen, so basically you wouldn't be looking at your tablet while you paint, but rather at your computer screen. :)

How big is a large intuos?

From what I've heard bigger isn't necessarily better as it makes them harder to rotate etc when drawing and the gigantic canvas isn't necessary

You're probably not looking for the intuos pro but the smallest size (active area) is 6.2 x 3.9 inches. The largest is 12.8 x 8.0 inches.
The Bamboo tablets are now apparently Intuos Pen & Touch and the Intuos 5 is the Intuos Pro.
The small intuos p&t is 6 x 3.7 inches and the medium is 8.5 x 5.3 inches. I can't seem to find a large however.
Then there's the Intuos pen you can get for a good $79 with an active area of 6 x 3.7 inches. :)

i have a bamboo create and it works grate. im thinking about getting the wireless adapter for it some time. but i would stray away from i pads. i have never hered them used for computer graphics, i have seen some of the drawing app on the i pad but still to do something amazing you would have to buy a $75 styles. but the bamboos do come with there own little game that get boring after an hour but its main use if for digital art. also if your looking to get into digital painting check out corel painter : http://www.corel.com/corel/product/...38&segid=10000006&storeKey=us&languageCode=en

Photoshop has a built in rotate function. You should never change the orientation of your tablet.

Ok so looking on trademe (New Zealands version of ebay) for some quick pricings, it seems the intuos small (152mm x 95mm) is available for $150 ish NZD and the intuos medium (216mm x 135mm) is available for $260 ish NZD. Between the two the only difference asides from screen size is that the medium's stylus comes with an "eraser".

Still on the fence as to which would be a better buy. Would the smaller one be big enough?

iPad doesn't have digitizer. If you want tablet with digitizer and apps get the Galaxy Note 10.1 with android or Surface Pro 2 with Windows 8.

Hmm, well I'm getting the medium (intuos pen and touch) one tomorrow (maybe) on amazon for about $200 usd. honestly if money isn't an issue I'd opt for the medium. However, I'm sure the small ought to work just fine for drawing/painting, you'll just have to move the canvas around a lot (depending on your canvas size and how much you're zoomed in ofc.)
The small is wee bit smaller (total width) than the average key board (minus the number pad and stuff).

I am not sure what NZD to USD is, but I'd say either works pretty well. They're the same thing with different surface areas. I'd say if you're not super serious about it then go with the smaller one. If you get super serious then you'll still have a really great tab that you can use until you have saved up for and upgrade.
