Apple just announced their first products to feature their own chipset, the M1 chip:

    MacBook Air
    MacBook Pro 13”
    Mac mini

once that MacBook Pro 16” hits their store, I’ll be dropping that $3k.

with how its built, i just know its going to overheat and eventually die out, even with everything being separate right now (gpu, cpu, ram, etc), they're still having overheating issues

seeing as their M1 chipset came out just today, and their major marketing campaign includes a redesigned heatsink and fan component that is silent and cool (featured in two different product videos), I'd say they're confident that the 2018 overheating issue was addressed specifically.

As to whether the 2020 macbooks will have a persisting issue, I'll wait a few months and see. They haven't released the 16" macbook yet anyway, so either way I'm waiting

M1 is an absolute beast, I firmly believe Apple has something better in store for 16' MBP, right now there's no point in buying the 13' MBP M1 compared to the Air, I don't even think you need the fan, since the SoC is incredibly efficient, and doesn't throttle in everyday tasks.

i dont know if the screens are differntt but it looks like you're just paying a premium for the touchbar on the keyboard

although its $999 to $1299 or something like that for the upgrade but etither way the m1 is blowing off the intel chips with how optimized this is on macos

Uhhh yes! It is pretty interesting. Feel free to elaborate why you think so, threads are definitely more interesting when we get to hear your opinion

The I/O on the M1 computers is sad. No 10Gb Ethernet. Yeah, nah. Besides, apple forgets their first gen products fast in terms of support.

    This is, quite frankly, incorrect.

The M1 undisputedly outperforms the core performance of everything Intel has to offer, and battles it with AMD’s new Zen3. Keep in mind, this is a first generation M1 running on a laptop with no fans.

This is Apple's slowest/ lowest performance M series CPU. This is Apple's first and lowest end M series chip, and it's blowing away Intel chips with discrete GPUs and more RAM. Their higher end processors which will be coming out over the next couple years are likely to be much better.

What’s really important for the general public and Apple’s success is the fact that the performance of the M1 doesn’t feel any different than if you were using a very high-end Intel or AMD CPU. Apple achieving this in-house with their own design is a paradigm shift, and in the future will allow them to achieve a certain level of software-hardware vertical integration that just hasn’t been seen before and isn’t achieved yet by anybody else.

    Huh?

Where did I say anything about performance? Are you dense? Do you not read what you respond to?

    sad

i thought you had more brain cells than this `:'(`:'(`:'(

x86 and x64 emulation takes a pretty heavy performance hit so I hope you're not expecting to get $3k performance out of your $3k laptop

I’m highly upset and disappointed that you don’t support my Apple fetish.

I think the reason I love Macs so much is that the two I’ve owned have lasted 8+ years and they’ve done the work I could have expected. But I never have tried to push my machines to the extreme if it’s not baking a render or animation in 3D graphics on my desktop. And now you can rent render farms, which was my idea 10 years ago

That's fair, I've always been baffled by the people who buy such expensive hardware for doing minor tasks but to each their own. You might run into more problems than you think with regular usage - while Apple will doubtlessly support ARM in their lineup of applications companies like Adobe or Microsoft won't be as quick to the punch (though with MS I'm pretty sure they have an ARM version of Office for their shit ARM Surfaces, don't know the work involved to get that to run on an Apple CPU). A good way to determine if this is a good purchase for you is to figure out which software you've used over the last year or so, and to see if there's already an ARM equivalent. If there isn't, try picturing yourself taking a 30-40% performance hit while using that software. Is it still tolerable?

Check out the last few comments I made above to Moh's post. Generally speaking I'm on the fence with this change, but mostly because it's Apple. I liked that Intel was holding them accountable. They were sort of "forced" to have relatively open hardware that you could run Linux or Windows on pretty easily. I'm sure some basement genius is going to come up with a solution to the Linux problem if there isn't one already, but Windows will not run on Apple ARM hardware ever.

Apple's core philosophy whenever they design or create a new product is to make sure that they have "end-to-end control". They want to control the hardware, the software, how you use the machine, and what you're able to do with it. I'm afraid that this move to ARM appears to be a shiny new "revolutionary" scale move, but is really Apple's biggest attempt yet at trying to control the entire spectrum of the user experience. They want to reduce flexibility - they do not want to give you more of it.

Having said that ARM is a great architecture that creates a lot more room for some really cool stuff to happen. Once this is mainstream, Apple machines will probably be extremely performant, especially in the laptop space. Not to mention running mobile apps on ALL portable devices regardless of form factor is something Google introduced and has proved to be very useful (running Android apps on Chromebooks). Using ARM exclusively will always have its issues though. It's a completely different architecture from x86 or x64, which we're all used to. That means that to run a modern application on ARM (that isn't natively compatible), you need to emulate it. This is very difficult to do especially at the 64-bit band of things. Apple has been able to achieve roughly 2/3 of native performance, which is great for emulation, but as I mentioned to Moh, you're paying a premium for a third less performance.

If I were in your shoes and were really curious about this device and had the money to burn, then go for it. If you're reluctant and you feel you could put the money toward other things, do that instead. It's a first gen product. Wait until it's refined. The emulation will only get better in time, so by gen 3 or so, I wouldn't be surprised if they've achieved 80-90% performance (it'll never be 100% though, keep that in mind).

Well if this didn’t put a wrench in my plan to purchase. Or maybe this will be the chip they use in their MBP

I have only heard of the M1 which will be used Apple wide. Honestly, long story short I think it's a good time to purchase some Apple stock as this has a lot of potential.

I've already read about it on ข่าว IT, but thank you for sharing this news. As far as I know, since 2021, all Apple users have been allowed to order spare parts for repairing devices at home. That is, even an amateur like me, not being an official representative of the company, not having the rights to repair under the logo, will be able to order a battery or any chip I need at home. I think it's great, but it will complicate getting a warranty on the Apple devices a little. It's unlikely that I can use the warranty card if I've already been digging into a broken iPhone myself. I could be wrong. But such a theory sounds likely enough. What do you think about it?
