Just a small speech I wrote about chocolate for my english homework:
Chocolate. What is it?
Well, chocolate has a long history, going back almost 500 years ago.
It was first "discovered" when some explorers came across a large sea going canoe in the Gulf of Honduras,
in which natives were transporting goods that included a cargo of cocoa beans!
Now, although chocolate is made from the fruit of the cacao tree it is cassified as a vergatable.
The fruit or "pods" of the tree are about the size of a football but the cacao trees do not start
producing these pods until they are about 3 or 4 years old and take over 10 years before they start
producing them regulary. The trees can grow up to about 20 feet tall and the pods they grow
contain a white pulp and and some small "Cocoa" beans which are used to make chocolate.
To make chocolate, the traditional way was to to boil the pulp recieved from grounding the beans
together and thus creating a chocolatey beverage but it wasn't until later on that chocolate
become a solid candy. The way to make chocolate today is to gather the healthy cocoa beans,
ferment them to remove any bitterness and then to roast them to reveal the tasty inside or better
known as the "nib". These nibs are then blended together with sugar, butter and flavourings and
then mixed thoroughly.
The 1st chocolate bars were actually marketed about 1850 by an Englishman, Joseph Fry,
Though in the middle of the 19th century a swiss man, Henri Nestle, developed a more
efficent way of making chocolate called conching.
About 1900 the industry was selling about 100,000 tons. By the mid 1990's production was over 2,500,000 tons.
The current largest consuming country in the world is, no surprise, the United States. Then it is followed
by Russia and Japan. Drinking chocolate is alos very popular and the two largest consuming countrys of this
is Norway and Australia.
Chocolate is also the worlds largest selling with the chocolate industry using up almost 20% of the worlds
peanuts and 40% or the worlds almonds.
Now, white chocolate. White chocolate is infact not actually made from cocoa beans but from its butter or "fat"
which is then mixed with sugar, butter and vegatable oil.
Now, I hope you have a learnt a bit more about that lovely substance we know as chocolate because a
life without chocolate is no life at all.
Thanks for listening.
Thoughts, Comments Etc.
