I have come to realize that my existance, along with yours and every living being's, means nothing more than advancing the species. The only difference between me and a tree is the burden of intelligent thought and curiosity. So stop trying to find a purpose or a meaning, because in the end we're just in a race against nature to evolve faster than every other living thing on this planet. There is no hope, only survival.

    Any thoughts on this?

NOTE: This isn't my quote, I saw it on a friends myspace page, and thought it was interesting. It might not even be his quote, but I'm almost positive he wrote it.

I beg to differ, if I may.

There is only hope, there is no survival... hahaha.

The power and will to survive is embedded within our DNA, though we as human beings are much like a virus, a cancer, that infects the earth and multiplies until it has completely destroyed it. Evolution can not continue forever in this physical plane of reality. At least, not under these current circumstances... I mean it can, but not in the linear biological fashion that you have in mind... it really is a complicated issue haha. The past few centuries, it has become evident that man and nature are on a collision course with one another... There is no stopping it at this point... it is possible to reverse it of course, but most of our population is too busy enjoying the neurological sedative effects of ignorant bliss and apathy to effectively correct the issues at hand, even though all of the steps we need to begin taking have been handed to us on a silver platter via this global network of communication we call the internet.

So what do we have to hold on to when physical survival is no longer an option?

We have hope... and hope is a choice, my friend... to hope that everything is ok... and everything is OK. Everything is ALRIGHT.. everything is on track, the universe is behaving exactly as it should, destruction is a form of creation and it is the natural course of things that our world should dismantle itself in chaos, just as it came into existence through chaos.

The beginning and the end of time are the same moment.

    I hope we're all ok.

But I'll be laughing either way!

    Peace and Love.

Oh... and of course.. we could talk about evolving into something non-physical... but my brain hurts too much right now to talk about singularity and the matrix, or turning into stars, becoming non conscious matter, and all that lovely jazz! hahaha.

I agree with pretty much everything you say, but what makes you think things such as tree's don't have intelligent thought or curiosity? just because they don't really move doesn't make them dumb they could be the most wise thing in the world and we would never know it. same for other species, We shouldn't simply assume that we are the most intelligent creature in the world simply because other animals can't or won't mimic humans, they may simply have there own reasonings for what they due rather than following what we do.

You both pretty well said the same thing , although yours too be honest was a lot more descriptive and meaningful.

Basically as he was saying is that all we can do is upgrade our species to hopefully figure out our Achilles heel to the earths demise and try to change that in a manner in which the rest of the humans would be willing to do.

Yes, your life is just your life and there is no higher meaning. Isn't it perfect? Stop worrying about the meaning of life and make your life meaningful.

theres is no chance that you read what they both posted or else you would not reply with such a stupid sentence. He came to a conclusion about what the meaning of his life was, then you tell him to do what he said we all work for?

It is true that humanity will meet its own destruction. That is why I care less about humanity more than most. I don't even care about this planet we're on. Through similar logic, much like that of yours, I've concluded that the only person I truly and meaningfully care about is myself.

Destruction is inevitable in the end. I have no intention of attempting to stop it - I'll be long dead before the later generations suffer.

Furthering our species is only going to end in our own destruction. That is the sad truth about intelligence.

If you stop trying too do something great you never will. Everyone has the chance too do great things it is just many of us can't be bothered. Anyone could become an aide worker or do something for the greater good of humanity/society and yeah... If you honestly think that your life has no meaning then fine enjoy being a nobody for your life, but maybe think that you could possibly do something and try too think of ways that you can do something... You WILL be able too give your life more of a meaning.

    Precisely.

While destruction MAY be inevitable i really think you are missing the point of this... And besides why not at least try and do your bit too... Prolong existence before your prophetised "Destruction of mankind". Surely your children and further relations would appreciate knowing that you at least tried too do things too make their existance more pleasant.

Heyy, my views on this are as follows:

    • Yes the destruction of Man Kind is inevitable but we can do a lot to make it longer!

    • To the people who say it is a waste of time, it is not! you would be surprised on how easy it would be to make a difference we just need the support of everyone, the United Nations needs to make the decisions and unite their people under it so we can fix our world!

Two bullets, easy eh! !

If life is pointless, then make why not make the most of it while you can?

Everything is there for a reason, mother nature doesn't make mistakes because everything is unique. If our purpose in life is to advance as a race and survive then so be it? Let's atleast have some fun along the way!

I have meaning in life, happiness.

That's it. I've said this for years to friends.

All we have is ourselves and our happiness. Everything else is superficial, but in the end none of it really matters. Bettering the human race is great, but as an individual it will be utterly worthless in 90 years or so.

Basic nihilism is what I'm getting at.

The meaning of life, is to find the meaning, in finding the meaning you also find happiness, love and wisdom, once you have acquired all these you will know the true meaning.

    To live...

Our existence doesn't mean anything in terms of a higher purpose. The only meaning it can have is the meaning that we give it.

Would you say intelligent thought and curiosity are burdens? Do you despise existence?

There can certainly be hope as it relates to your goals, or your happiness.

Scientificly: What makes you think there has to be a reason? We are just developed organisms. As time goes by we will continue to become more developed until we either blow our own planet up (war) or our sun dies. There are probably a million other things like us out there. If there is no life what else is there?

I believe Sythe already covered this and half the people here have accepted that we will never know what happens after life, why we are hear, or if there is a god or not.

Stop nit-picking the minor details - Is the spelling of a word relevent to an argument? Is it causing a complete misunderstanding? No.
