Although either console will make you happy, for the long run I suggest the PS3. The PS3 has greater untapped potential and will undoubtedly boast a greater lifespan than the Xbox and possibly the Wii.
Blu-ray is now the standard and if you can't wait for prices of standard bluray players to go down, then the PS3 is a clear choice. Microsoft currently has no plans for a bluray extension, however they will have one before the end.
Online with the PS3 is free. I've never liked the idea of paying a monthly fee to enjoy a game I already purchased.
Games, Sony's selection may be somewhat limited now, but they are Sony and can make all sorts of dastardly deals to bring the games to their system.
PS3 is more expensive and certain versions boast backward-compatibility while others do not.
conclusion: if you have the cash, get a PS3. If not, buy a Wii now and wait until Sony drops the prices more. Look at the 2nd and 3rd generation PS2s compared to the original PS2 for an idea of what they will inevitably do with the PS3. You can't go wrong with a Wii in the meantime though.
