Going to have to disagree with you. No matter how much effort you put into what you say, new members are either shot down by oldfags or ignored. As for being more community focused...You can keep telling yourself that if you want but the reality of things is that we have an incompetent COMMUNITY team who, throughout the year, run a couple of half-arsed events which don't actually bring people together. I'd agree with a lot of the points @Admires has put forward.
Way to combine unrelated subjects in one drunken slur

Genuinely your problem is this: you're not participating heavily in the market. Trust and status indicators on this site are market based. It's nothing to do with oldfags vs newfags

Wasn't actually talking about me but anyway. You've just said you're wanting to shift to a community based site yet you've also just said that's just the opposite of how this community works. Where's the logic?

Ps. Was just my 2 cents on what Admires said.

I'm not able to shift the opinions of the site's users. They will regard what they will regard as status indicators.

So if you're unable to change how people think why are you trying to shift to a community based site when clearly, as you've said, we're a market site and thats how people like things to be?

I can encourage community engagement by changing the rules and restoring some of our previous community oriented members.

Idk why people think there's some magical button I can push to make things the way they personally want them. You realise there are other thinking self interested human beings on the other end of all the text you read right?

Never said there was a perfect solution. Just saying if the site is successful because of it's market features then you should push towards that rather than trying to heavily encourage community engagement.

We used to have a nice balance between tbh. As I said I can't change people's opinions I can only hope to encourage new/old users who are community focused to join. I doubt the market based status will ever change however.

They will/have achieved that with the c++ client tbh. And it's still free to play

You mean the NXT client that came out in April? Yeah it looks nice to you and I when we look and compare to what RS classic used to look like, but honestly it still doesn't compare to other games on the market. Also doesn't change the fact that at its core it's still RS and is severely lacking in features that current MMO's have. Really the only thing that it has going for it at the moment is the fact that you can access a limited amount of content via F2P, and low hardware requirements. 07RS is still more popular than RS3 even with the NXT client you're talking about.

Like I said before, I don't see RS dying in the foreseeable future, but it won't be pulling in large amounts of new users anytime soon when there are better options in the genre. Unfortunately, MMO's just aren't as popular as they were 10 years ago, just look at the most played games at the moment.

turns out that people play a game to have fun rather than grind for years to get to the fun

I'm interested to know what features its lacking compared to other MMOs

in world of warcraft, for example, you quest to gain levels and there's hardly grinding.

in runescape, you chop a log for a year to get to 99, and then do it again with another skill. you basically get the skills up to do the quests.

Not sure what quests they've put in Rs3 but I think they were working toward this model?

Wow is story based content that people finish a month after an expansion then they stop playing until the next expansion. This is unfortunately the penalty for taking out grinding

Yes the casual gamer wants to be able to jump in and play regardless. But RPGs don't lend themselves to this because they are identity based games. The central mechanic of the game is you play a long time to build the characters identity. This is true even of the original pen and paper games that spawned all computer RPGs.

Taking the grind out is a mistake. In WOW that was largely done in the last expansion with the garrisons and was not popular. Making the grind more interesting is the way to go.

yeah i agree which is why i think MMO's as a whole are a dying genre. i think first person shooters, MOBA's, and games you can pick up and play immediately are going to be the future of the gaming industry.

for example, in runescape, i've heard there's really no sense of achievement for a lot of people. if my friend has a higher strenght than me, i'll just think, "ok he spent more time training his strength", and it's as simple as that. but if somebody is better at league of legends than me and has played for a shorter period of time than me, i'll think "wow, this player has gotten good at the game fast".

Basically what i'm saying is that in many MMO's, time is the only gap in "skill" if you exclude pking, whereas in other popular games at the moment, there are a lot more factors to skill than just grinding in respect to time spent.

I don't think the genre is dying. It's cyclical.

Look at TV shows they are the same way. You can't jump into the 6th season of Game of Thrones without having watched the preceding 5. You won't know whats going on and it'll be boring. That doesn't make a show that you can jump into the middle of better. They are complementary. Sometimes you want a show thats just action and not too heavy on the plot and characters, and sometimes you want the whole deep world experience.

The D&D class of games has been around longer than the computer industry and it is definitely not about to die.
