I don't see how it is selfish to abort/put up for adoption a mentally challenged child. When you have a child, you are expecting, one day for this child to grow up and move out and start his own life, just like you did. You aren't really signing up for a lifetime commitment, cause once your kid hits 18, he can live on his own and actually function and survive. When you have a mentally challenged kid, you have to care for the child their whole life, there is no leaving at 18, there is no future for that child, sure they can bag groceries at a store but that's only if their condition isn't as severe and even then, it's only a few hours a week. Having a mentally challenged kid is way more of a commitment for a parent, with way less return. I know my parents are excited for me and my brothers to move out, so they can start their lives again similar to what they had before children, but with a mentally challenged kid, you're taking care of a child with the mind of a three year old but the body of a man, for the rest of their or your life.
