    Majoring in programming? (Web Dev)

About 90% sure I want to major in programming and also pretty set on web development. I spend most of my time on the computer and online so I think it'd be cool to have the skills to build my own websites and websites for others. I'm a senior in high school and going to be applying to some colleges soon but figured I might as well get a head start when ever I have free time. I took beginner java and AP java in high school but I'm wondering which language I should learn first as far as college? What is the first language class you have to take? Do I decide upon web dev and take classes according to that or do I have to learn everything regardless or what type of programming career I want to pursue? I know I won't be taking these classes until sophomore or junior year but hey if I started now I'd be extremely far ahead and could coast through I suppose.

    Basic questions (or if tldr):
    1. What is the first language you are taught in college (currently)?

    2. What is the first language if you are pursuing web development?

Well first thing, you need to take an abundance of math courses before you dive into anything programming. A few universities where I'm from don't put you in a language class before 3rd year, instead you do math for the first 2 then math and coding. Note that this is for computer science which is generally everything.

Anyway as a web developer you'd probably use PHP and HTML first, then move on to the more specific things like ASP and applets, etc.

I'm up for math courses (I think) since math is generally where I excel. Worried that they'll be really advanced though, especially at the schools I want to apply to. So you suggest learning PHP and or HTML first?

programming requires shittons of calculus, as does any science and where i live colleges tend to teach basic first. As you develop, the languages become more diverse, as does the calculus applied to the programming.

So, which ones do you think I'll learn first? I'm ready for math, that's the only class I'm good in. 730 on sat math no studying, and first time. I have the logic down and can do it in my sleep. I'm just worried about the other classes

So you're majoring in cs and the first class they're having you take is java? I didn't like java that much because it seemed like we never learned how to apply it. I can make a little poker game but I can't really export it easily or distribute it. Maybe that changes in college?

Yeah first class I have it java. It really isn't hard at all. I have learned a lot in the 2 months I've been taking it. I guess it really depends on the college you go to on what class you get put with but where I go its java first than c++ along side with all the math classes.

Yea, Java tends to be one of the first languages mainly because of how flexible but also how easy it is to learn. I personally know VB6, VB.net, Java and C# and find Java to be the easiest after VB.net.

Depends on the type of programming you want to get into. If you are looking for web programming, there is little no no need for an "abundance of math" knowledge.

The real math only comes in when you start getting into things like game programming.

As for web programming, I would get into learning PHP. That's one of the common languages companies use. Don't look for college course that are specific for web programming or web development. Those are usually bull shit course that only teach you about website/database connectivity.

Find a software development program. It will teach you several languages. With that you will be able to get into whatever you want, and down the road if you get bored of web programming, you could get into something else. Most companies (web start ups and such), make actual web applications and systems rather than just pull data to a screen from a database.
