Change the font for all ranks

I believe there are two issues with the font style chosen for all ranks sitewide. The first issue is the font style is faint and hard to read (narrow & condensed). The more letters or numbers in a rank title, the harder it is to read. The second issue is the size of the font. The size being as small as it is in combination with the narrow and condensed nature of the font makes it terrible for the eyes. I'm not going to suggest a specific font because everyone has different tastes, but if many of us can agree that a change would be better, then I believe a community vote on different font styles would be the best route to reach a consensus on a desired result. I also want to note that I'm not asking for the font size to be considerably bigger (1 or 2 sizes up is preferrable).

It has always been like this and nobody's ever said they are unreadable or too small, it is perhaps an issue with your vision or you're on some 4K monitor which makes everything smaller?

 

I have 20/20 vision. I’m mostly on my phone which means what I see is zoomed-in in comparison to my monitor which I use infrequently. It does become an eyesore when looking at rank titles with longer characters because of the font style (narrow & condensed). It feels like I’m looking at a barcode unless I squint my eyes and focus.

Naturally there is an aversion to change, especially because we are creatures of habit and because change requires more work and effort. “If it ain’t broke, why fix it?” It is often an excuse we give ourselves to avoid committing to work we otherwise wouldn’t have to do if we just left it alone. But why not change for the better? That is the angle I’m going for here.

Sure it is not an issue of grave magnitude, but it doesn’t hurt to ask or wonder if there is a better alternative to what currently exists.

In the end, taste is subjective. This is why I wanted to see what the community feels about this via polling. If the results show that it isn’t something that should be changed, then so be it. I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it doesn’t make them right or wrong.

If anyone knows the font used for ranks, I can try to create a mockup.

 

Why are people voting no for this? Why would this negatively affect anyone?

 

Here is a mockup I made. The top is 15 px (mockup) and the original size (bottom) seems to be 12/13 px. I don't think increasing the size helps in this instance. It appears to be a font issue, not a size issue.

Isn't this some kind of nostalgic font type that was used in Runescape or whatever aswell? I've seen it before.

Either way I like it as is, I don't disagree it's a bit hard to read, but it also feels nostalgic and part of the site to me.

 

Runescape - specifically Oldschool Runescape uses a custom font called “Runescape UF”. It is not the same font used for ranks on this website. They are thematically similar, but different. I’m not suggesting to completely move away from the theme. There are tons of fonts similar to the one currently used that provides a more clear reading of text.

Change isn’t always necessary, however some changes provide a more quality look and feel which enhances user experience. vBulletin was the software used for this website before the switch to Xenforo. You can make the argument that vBulletin was a nostalgic part of the website for many users who were here to experience it, but the change was necessary to modernize website function that benefits all of us. I’m not hinting that both of these changes are on the same level, but there was also pushback against the change. We should embrace change, even if it “feels” different. Companies, businesses, organizations change all the time in an attempt to make themselves bigger. We should have the same mindset.

 

Hard to read the custom donor ones for me, otherwise it's fine.

 

Because you recognize the rank associated with the donor amount vs the actual donor value. It is hard to see custom ranks because the ranks aren’t recognizable, forcing you to read the value. Both use the same font, so it comes down to the font being the issue.
