[denied] Discord-integrated Push banners

For the channels like #cdt-news, #trade-alerts, #news etc. it’d be neat to have a push notification appear on sythe.org and a setting (off by default) to store those notifications in “Alerts” when the user is offline during a push.

WHAT: I’d suggest bottom right corner, no bigger than 200x100px, appearing and disappearing no slower than 3 seconds unless hovered on, and automatically hyperlinked to the discord channel by default, or to a URL that was typed in the discord message to accompany the alert.

WHY: There’s hundreds that use the site regularly or at least drive-by. Not everyone is looking at CDT stuff, a newcomer will be more likely to participate in free money if they know it exists rather than having to find it.

HOW: when I get home, I’ll make concept designs to show what it looks like in my mind.

POSSIBLE ITERATION: a news marquee, no larger than the height of 9pt font, that will store a backlog of push notification headlines, omnipresent appearing across the bottom-most edge of the sythe.org browser view. Disabled in mobile, though. Instead of the backlog appearing in alerts, which might annoy users even if disabled by default, this would keep the separation between personal alerts and site notifications.

 

I feel like this would drive some more activity within the community. Especially with a reminder of on-going events, Sythe News, and alerts. I support this idea as long as it isn't "In your face" and can be disabled by members who don't desire it.

Could also potentially be monetised, similar to banner spots. I.e., say 3 thread titles appear per 1x scroll, then 1 could be a paid spot (specifics and further granular detail required obv). Unsure if would be possible from a tech/coding perspective, but if it is, then I see it being utilised. Maybe we'd allow said paid spots to be more visible by allowing certain paid-only fonts/graphics/colours/etc. Noting that we're a free market, and this is similar to paying for stickied/bolded/etc threads, but I draw a difference here, as it's far less visible, constantly changing, and far less 'in your face'.

 

I'd be hesitant to incorporate ad space because I think the power of the news bar is the pure utility, and ads might make people disabled the feature to avoid having another ad. But I wouldn't be mad about a single space being opened to ad-bidding.

As far as whether it's possible, I'd say the simplest solution is this: since the suggestion is to port discord channel messages into the notification pop-up and the news bar, just do a new channel called #paid-ad, and then have the bidding for the message in #paid-ad be handled in the same way the ad banners are on the site homepage.

 

I support. I think it's a solid suggestion and it doesn't look bad.

 

I love it, I will support as long as there is an option in settings somewhere to turn that off!

Not really a fan, and aslong as this system is outdated while we wait forever for the new Xenforo update, I doubt it’s even possible. A marquee bar shouldn’t be too hard, but one that’s linked with our Discord server which isn’t even able to be viewed without verification? Meh. Updating our current forum software already seems to take ALOT of time, so having this developed..? It’d be quicker to run a marathon with a turtle.

 

LOE is never a reason to automatically decline a product iteration, though!

About your concerns for feasibility: create bot user, verify bot user, pass discord data into forum end-point via authenticated bot user, print to HTML, done.

So let's hope things move apace.

 

This will get added to the wishlist as its a creative idea, but there are more pressing updates that will take priority for now
