First-person shooter showdown: Valorant vs. CS:GO​

A really interesting topic that it seems like people here on Sythe haven't discussed yet.

No doubt Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is already a giant game that will be tough to beat. But after the successful start of Valorant, being a really hot game knowing that a lot of people have been playing it recently, does anyone think Valorant actually has a shot of dethroning CS:GO in the first-person shooter category? Or is Valorant a bit too sort of "casual" to defeat CS:GO in the competitive eSports category?

What do you think? Will Valorant just be temporary hype? Or will it just grow from here?

I personally believe it doesn't really fit in to the FPS eSport scene. A few reasons I think this are firstly the abilities you get in Valorant. It really doesn't fit in to the FPS game feel imo, an example would be abilities you can use at the start of the round and just kill a player.

Following on from the abilities point, in terms of eSports I really think this would put it off from being something people will be able to watch and enjoy. The reason being, newer people wanting to watch would pretty much have no understanding of what these do whereas in CS, it's pretty simple to understand after only watching a few rounds.

For these reasons I really think CS will not be overthrown and Valorant will eventually die out imo.

There's always the counter argument of "It's a game made by Riot!". This is a fair point and I do think they will continue trying but in the long run it's mainly about if people will watch tournaments and also play the game which I think long term, people won't.

I would love to hear others opinions on this too.

 

Highly doubt one game could beat another game. I mean Fortnite and CSGO both seem quite popular but it's still a whole other level and kind of game. I do think Valorant has attracted alot of players, and probably will keep on attracting new players as it's a new game unlike CSGO. Whereas CSGO still does push new updates out, it's not a new game anymore, the rush is over for the most people. People will start playing and start becoming the best in new games, every time. I've played Valorant for quite some time now and while I can still enjoy it at times, I'm already kinda over the "rush" a new game brings.

 

The abilities definitely is a flaw when looking at it at a competitive perspective. In a casual player's perspective though, I'd say it's more "fun".

I think so too. I see Valorant and CSGO like LoL and DOTA2: both on the same genre, but both striving really well.

 

Counter Strike has been a lifetime, fun, long-lasting, basic, competitive game anyone can play & understand, as well as have casual fun.

This game is like a shooter with abilities and stuff and I don't think it will ever dethrone CS, but I do believe the game could bring some competition to the market for awhile.

 

Yeap. Whatever happens, competition is always good. CSGO has been sitting pretty and slacking off for a bit too long due to the lack of competition. Seems like they found a potential competitor.

 

personally I tried Valorant, and I'm an old school CS player and I gotta say, it's 100% different. Those abilities and stuff really make the game feel completely different from CS. The only thing that resembles cs is the gunplay. Even the maps are tiny as shit on Valorant

 

Same, also a CS vet. And it sure is really different, but also extremely fun tho that's for sure.

I went ahead and turned the voice over off on Valorant. It makes it a way better game! I don't have to listen to cheesy comments and other silly things.

I don't see it dethroning CS though.. It'll more than likely burn out after this year.

 

You meant the voice comms? Yea, so much toxic teammates; though voice comms do help a lot coordinating stuff so I have mixed feelings.

Definitely the more likely result. Though it's too early to say for sure what's going to happen.
