[Denied] Remove Overwatch, Dota 2, and CSGO Discussion subforums

Currently these sections are dead,
Overwatch Discussion
Dota 2 Discussion
CS:GO Discussion

And could just be put into the Gaming General section. The Gaming general section seems to have traffic to it and those who would like to participate in any of the 3 listed sections could go in there without creating any spam IMO. I don't think it really requires much more thought than that to go into it. I'd almost include the League of Legends section too but I don't think that one would be removed. Although I think one section for general gaming discussion would be nice, but possibly clunky.

Let me know what you think and if I can edit this to sound any better.

 

You'll have to remove 3/4 of the website if you want to get rid of dead sections. And that's a conservative estimate.

 

Other than SytheLib and Security discussions, every other subforum is as recent as last sunday (going on activity based on front pages recent threads). I'd have to look further to see sections inside of them.

 

I think a lot of these older games can be replaced or put as sub topics like the Diablo III one for example.

I mean, I consider any section which doesn’t have at least more than one post every 24 hours as dead lol. And i think that’s being generous.

Let's close the website while we're at it aswell. No support, I still consider them somewhat active. If anything we could close the Dota 2 Discussion one, but the rest are fine-ish imo.

I actually do support this because the forum just looks dead from a newcomers perspective. Like I tried to get a friend to join a few months ago and he mentioned how more than half the sub-forums don’t have posts for weeks. How about merging all current posts into gaming general?

@Superfluous this is the same idea for your thread on general discussion and SFA. Just merge SFA into general discussion. We need to have a serious discussion on making the forum look cleaner and less dead. Merging SFA into general and merging the above gaming forums into gaming general will allow for more discussion as more activity entices others to also post. If a section is dead, nobody ends up posting and it’s a cycle.

 

Gaming general would be nice.

I think the forums should be cleaned up to begin with anyways, and working to get that done might just start with removing these dead gaming subforums.

Agreed, I get the point of separation for some games.. But completely dead ones are just pointless.

 

That was the entire premise behind making this post, was to take a section which has some foot traffic (gaming general) be the front of all of the singular game sections that get 0 traffic now. I mentioned League may not necessarily be added but for the sake of all things, it would just be good to have a gaming general section for any game to be honest, it doesn't necessarily have to be a game that we already advertise. Thank you for seeing that and agreeing though.

Also to add, in the past I had tried to help Shin decide a new forum look where threads would be more conventional but it never ended up anywhere. I'm going to start a feedback thread on subforums and how we could clean the site perhaps.

 

i agree if you put all the dead parts of the forum in 1 place might bring some traffic to them and it would clean up abit

I honestly feel like this all boils down to the current implementation of forum software being outdated and not using anything one might expect of a modern message board.

If only they were clustered together in a way where people could also click on a tag/tag posts as specific games then it would be real easy to basically do both.

One main section for all of them to bring more attention to all, and then people who are clearly only interested in one game can filter it out quickly. The problem with just removing sections, other than unintentionally making it harder for people to sort, is that it also basically kills any activity that could have started there. Imagine in the early days of a specific section, if it was just shut down for lack of activity then the activity would never be there. "General" sections may result in the person not even bothering posting it. For example if there was a "computer hardware sales" section maybe more people would try to sell their graphics cards and processors, even though "real life" sales already exist. And if someone is looking for a graphics card, maybe they'd check it if they could specifically sort through computer parts instead of going there and having to check through shoes, yugioh cards, and amazon reviews. Of course they can just search for it but could you imagine searching for runescape gold and that being your only option, or having to go through ALL runescape sales to pick out the gold threads?

Just to be clear I use market as examples but it would apply to discussions as well, I just felt like it would be a quicker to explain with the markets.

 

I agree that tagging would be a good implementation, is this something tc could implement? I know that we are going to XF2 in the near future right? Would it work there?

 

I'm kind of on the fence mainly due to what Grave said it'd be better to revamp them in a way in a way where others could filter out what games they want to discuss as it's just a cluster of some random games in one section as it currently stands, yet RS has whole section for discussion on its own. I know it's the niche, but trying to revamp the sections in a more organized way would still allow for the RS discussion sections to thrive while allowing other sections to thrive better at the same time. I'm not a fan of how it's currently structured, so rather than remove them completely I'd prefer to take that approach, although I'm not sure on the possibility/difficulty.

 

TC is basically at least temporarily gone because @Sythe and @Matthew were upset that I was trying to actually work on any improvements with them. The general philosophy is that if it's not literally broken don't improve it, that the vocal minority can pretty much stop any progress because they don't like change, and that not a lot is physically possible on Xenforo so I'm going to go with a resounding "no" on this one.
