Why eat Pork (e.g. bacon, ribs etc.)?

My question is why do people eat pork? I mean a lot of people say that it tastes good but doesn't the thought of eating a pig make you throw up? From what I've studied and learned and read about, pigs roll around in the mud in their own feces and digest it as well. You might argue that cleaning the slaughtered pig will "cleanse" it of the bacteria and stuff but come on, really? Anyways, I didn't come here to argue I just want everyone's honest opinion on this topic

You beat me to both points I was going to make, besides the moral issue on the treatment of pork - not really worried about that honestly.


The only reason that you are trying to down pork is because you are religious. Your research is misinformed in the fact that pigs are not the only stock animal that eats it's own fecal matter. Do you really think cows are going to pick around cowpies to eat grass that is growing there? Doubt it. Do you really think chickens do not defecate where they sleep? Doubt it. The only reason the holy books of Abrahamic descent says you cannot consume pork is because of health concerns. Then they did not the details behind that if you eat uncooked or untreated pork that you would get horrible diseases and die, they just knew that if you ate it there was a good chance you were going to get sick. It is all based on trial and error and not divine inspiration.


Pork is easily sustainable meat, and help recycle food refuse. It is great tasting, and is just plain awesome stuff.

Your last comments make no sense. If you can provide proof that pigs are related to lamb (has to be scientific proof, not wikipedia or something), I'll agree with your point.

You have to consider that the holy books are an amalgamation of cultures and knowledge. Take the Torah, it follows the Jewish people through several periods of bondage including the Assyrian period of bondage. The Assyrians were masters of cultural diffusion so even if at the time the Jewish people didn't eat pork they assuredly knew of some culture that did, and mind you these were histories of the Jews being written some time after the actual events. Then travel down the timeline a few thousand years and you get the Koran (or however you wish to spell it), it being a mixture of even more cultures - including Indian and Hellenistic Greek and Republican Romans.

Pork is a sweet meat and there is no real comparison, it tastes like pork. I am not claiming that it is much better, I am just saying that it is great tasting. A well cooked and seasoned steak can be better than pork. It all depends, and is a subjective experience.

i'll give ya my opinion on it. it's pretty delicious. of course some people will say it's the best meat, and others won't like it. i myself wouldn't say that it's better than steak, but it's close. the ribs when well cooked are slightly sweet almost, and a bit salty. it's absolutely delicious. then there's bacon, possibly the best part of a breakfast. it's kind of like eating super delicious, thin jerky with crispy edges.

in fact if you ever for whatever reason decide to try it, make sure you have some extremely well cooked bacon.

I've eaten a lot of pork. It is absolutely delicious. When you clean the pig and cook it, all harmful bacteria is removed. There is nothing physically harmful about eating pork. You might have a spiritual objection, but that is irrelevant. Mushrooms grow in poop. We put manure on fields/vegetables. The conditions for cows/chickens on industrial farms are abhorrent. If you saw those conditions you'd prefer to eat pork. And yeah, if you clean something, it will become clean. Are you arguing that pork is forever tainted because of some biased, arbitrary religious text you read?

When you go to the supermarket and pick up a pork roast, it is just as sanitary as any other meat. I don't think you can really argue that. I'm beginning to question what you've "studied".

Muhammad, as a member of the Merchant class, would have been well versed in the varying cultures which undoubtedly influenced his works of religion. Which is relevant because he would have had the knowledge of cooking preparations from these other cultures - and he of course based his work from the earlier holy books of the Abrahamic religions. I am just trying to give you a historical basis that is indisputable, because as been previously discussed in other threads a holy book cannot be used as a primary source historical document. Providing a historical basis for this is important because it describes and gives reasonings behind the belief. Though it is honestly a seriously antiquated belief, because if you consider how much has changed since those times - but if you have a basis it makes for a better argument. Instead of just saying 'Because xyz book says so.'


It isn't a sugary sweet, it is just like a meaty sweetness. It is different.

Snatchmasta, I beg to differ. It is generally perceived by science that when meat is cooked, the MAJORITY of the bacteria that is in it is destroyed however some non-harmful bacteria may remain. Very rarely is there a case where harmful bacteria is left (this only occurs if meat is not properly prepared). Also, your point about the manure on food that we consume etc. is not exactly valid. When pigs consume it, they don't persé "recycle" it as plants and mushrooms do. I'm not arguing; I'm simply saying that this is what I've been taught and what I believe. Again, the point of this thread is asking WHY people eat pork

I'd reckon that the extreme heat is able to kill bacteria. I'm no biologist by any means, but logically, bacteria are cells - and cells don't survive in extreme heat.

Oh boy, again, sorry if this is a tad bit rude but, would you mind reading my previous post? Some of my reasoning is based on science (i.e. the examples of bacterial infections I put in my other post, taken from the CDC website.) The teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are based on what God taught him and what he derived from every day life. The Qur'an was WRITTEN two years AFTER his passing and it was canonized 20 years later. The teachings that are present in the Qur'an are in no way influenced by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is the word of God. Indeed this is stressed because many of the first people to hear the Qur'an have said that the poetry is that of no man. Muhammad (PBUH) himself was illiterate and therefore he could not have had any knowledge of poetry and prose and thus could NOT have composed the Qur'an. The teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself that have been recorded are known as Hadith or "sayings and followings of the Prophet." In these teachings, there are different reasons that the Prophet gives as to why the consumption of pork is forbidden or "haram." Also, the consumption of pork is forbidden in all cases except for when a person is starving and has no food. Chapter 2 (Surah 2, Al-Baqarah) Verse 73 (Ayah 73) of the Quran says, "Hence a man may eat of pig or other impurities if he will otherwise be in real danger of starvation; for Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."

^^^ As you can see, this has become a religious argument, exactly that which I had not wanted to occur. However I do understand the perspective and reasoning that you are presenting. The historical basis I am using is that of scientists during the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries who conducted multiple experiment and found that swine can contain illnesses that can be passed to humans through consumption. I'll repeat that I'm making my argument based on the research of science. I think we are getting a little sidetracked from the true purpose of this thread ^_^

True, that's what I thought too but here's what I found in some digging I did: "Proper heating or reheating will kill bacteria that cause foodborne illness. the meat of a pig is actually one of the cleanest of most regularly eaten creatures. because it does all the above stuff its cleansing organs are some of the best around.

Pork is one of my favorite meats, I understand your logic on bacteria and what not, how the pig lives its life etc... however when i'm eating pork, shredded pork, bacon, anything swine related, i'm not thinking about the animal. just as one doesn't think of a cow when eating a hamburger or steak (or atleast i think..(vegetarians and what not excluded)).

As for the taste, shredded pork is my favorite. good shredded pork tastes juicy and sweet, like said previously by Emperor_Nero. Bacon of course too, even though i don't have it much :/

explaining how meat can be sweet is hard, but as you mentioned about the Salmon, i would have to agree. A good salmon has that sweet bite, so does pork, but it's a meat, not a fish.
