    Youtube for a living?

Hey guys I wanted to get your opinion on a few things. I've been thinking a lot lately about how people make a living on Youtube. I'm not talking about the people like RWJ, but more so game commentators such as Woodysgamertag and Wingsofredemption and people like that.

I've been looking around trying to find out how much they get paid, because they never say. Apparently they aren't allowed to say. Everywhere I look I can't find much info on it, and the people that claim to know have been throwing out numbers that seem ridiculously low. Anyone know?

Also I've been thinking of starting a gameplay/commentary channel. I was thinking about putting up all kinds of videos of a variety of games, as I consider myself a big gamer. I would put up videos such as Let's Plays, tips, achievement guides, all sorts of things. How hard is it to go from just starting a channel to making money on Youtube. Like ultimately the goal would be to make a lot of money from putting up videos. I know they have Youtube partnerships and Machinima contracts and all kinds of sponsorships and make money from ads and shit.

But yeah, any info and advice would be really helpful. Please no trolling.

    Youtube for a living?

A couple of people (less than 10) of the entire population of Youtube make millions off ads alone.
I highly doubt that you will get far doing gaming commentary, tons of people do it and only a few are actually succesful.

    Good luck

"How hard is it to go from just starting a channel to making money on Youtube."

If that's your mentality, I suggest you don't even do it.

You best expect it's difficult. If it was really that easy, I'd be doing it and every jack-and-joe on the streets would do it too for quick cash.

It's difficult and very few are successful.

    Youtube for a living?

Well obviously I know it's extremely difficult.. Does anyone have any advice?

@SexayMistahBee, like I said already I'm not trying to make millions, and I know people like RWJ and them make A SHIT TON. I've already stated though I'm not talking about them. And I know for a fact people make a living off game commentary. I could list a few for you..

@Rapiid Fury, that's not my mentality at all. I'm not saying "Hey I'm gonna make a Youtube channel and overnight become rich!" that's not it at all. Obviously I know it will take A LOT of work, I'm just saying that's the ultimate goal. If you wanted to become a pro athlete or something, you wouldn't have the mentality that it will happen overnight, but you would always have that ultimate goal in the back of your mind right?

You make money on every video you have adsense enabled on. I really have no clue what they pay for each view, keep in mind this is without sponsors or any of that :p. Say a video gets 4 million views and the adsense pays 1 cent per view (only using this number as an example) The Youtuber will make $40000 from that one video!!!! :D

Per 1k views they make money. A friend of mine does it, although he couldn't say he told me that one month he got a 3k check. (he is just starting at 10k subs)

Yea you don't get paid per video, and I think its different for every person, which is why you see people that have YouTube partnerships say stuff like: 2k likes and I'll make a bank vid, or if 750 people favorite this vid I'll make a new one tomoro etc.

    Youtube for a living?

And I'm saying that hundreds, maybe thousands of people on youtube do game commentaries but don't make much, if any money at all.
What makes you think that you will shine?

    Youtube for a living?

Since Googleads pay high many people want to start this career to earn money as a part time job. They earn more than 1k from ads sure with enough subs

Yes you can make a stable living. Tim Delaghetto made $38k in a year two years ago and his income has risen since then.

AFAIK - You get around $500 per 100k views.

Woody was once paid $6,000 to advertise an iPhone app on his channel.

The key part in trying to make it on YT is by having well known YTers advertise for you. Otherwise, good luck, it's going to take a hell of a lot longer to get any where since the market is pretty much set in place.

A friend of mine tried to make it big, but he didn't get too far. He'd get a few K views, but, it took too much time and he ended up hating it because of how much of a hit it took to his social life.

So if you have no social life, a fast internet connection, decent gaming skills, a good commentator voice, connections with people, and video editing skills, then go for it.

Otherwise, you'll end up wasting time on something that won't go very far but you'll probably have fun doing.

You won't make any commenting on games other than ads as it's a copyrighted material and illegal to make money off of

Oh and make sure you never use copyrighted items, this hurts your partnership chances a lot and you wont be able to use adsense on any of the videos.

    Youtube for a living?

There are hundreds of millions of YouTube channels averaging in the 1-2 videos per channel mark. In the gaming section alone, you're looking at close to three million active YouTube channels that are producing content at any time. That means that your content must be better than the rest of the YouTubers, or at least of a high enough caliber to gain attention.

    I'll make this clear:
-If you don't have a professional video editing software, you will not make money on YouTube
-If you don't have voice commentary, you will not make money on YouTube
-If you don't have HD recording capabilities, you will not make money on YouTube
-If you don't have a mature voice, you will not make money on YouTube

No one wants to listen to a high pitched voice kid talk about what he likes in gaming and if the production quality is low, you have even worse of a chance.

(And to whoever said to pay a high subscribed YouTube channel to get views and to make money, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Here's what actually happens:
    1) Mike (he'll be our dummy for today) pays Woody $500 for a shout out on his video
    2) Woody's extremely loyal subscribers (which is probably around 5-10%) visit that channel and even less actually subscribe
    3) Mike's video blows up. He may hit 20k views on a video and may gain 300 subscribers
    4) Mike continues to create videos, but doesn't pay Woody to shout these out. Mike's view count lessens from the last video dramatically. Normally, this is extreme from the shout video to the first non shout video and less extreme from the first non shout to the second non shout.
    5) Mike has $500 less than he started with, 300 subscribers max and literally no adsense revenue to show for it.)
