Personally, I think that once an addiction to RS is fueled, it cannotbe stopped without drastic measures. Once addicted, you will stop going outside. You won't speak to your irl buddies, yet you know about the kid you pked with's sick uncle. The self revelation of adiction comes forth when one begins to doubt the addiction and make up lame excuses for themselves.
On a side note, I was addicted to rs in 05. I got hacked/banned in 06 and quit. Then in 07 I started again until jagex put in the old bh. I started up again when bh worlds came to exist. I stoppped because of junior year. Currently, I am no longer associated with rs,@nd it feels great. Sure, I enjoy looking at threads on sythe but I have lost the desire to play. A word of advice: never start up after you quit; it just fuels the fire and you won'be able to focus on everyday stuff.

 

I think it all depends on the person. I was addicted from 2004 - 2007. I got banned at the very end of 2007, in the december mass bannings for RWT'ing. Then halfway through 2008, i had damaged my arm and couldn't really do much at all with it, so i just made a new account and played occaisionally on it. I currently log in a couple times a day, do a farming run and then log out. I can also go days without playing. But i will be quitting again when i buy a couple rares after christmas when their prices drop. So when i go back to playing, my rares should be worth lots .
