Year and a half in review

There needs to be a catalyst for growth that is more than just events. There have been half-hearted attempts to make our various gaming sections active and they have all failed pretty badly. People keep making the same mistakes over and over again like making subsections for things that are not active enough to merit a subsection (newest prime example is the overwatch section). Anyone can do events that people will find enjoyable and people like streamers will attract way more attention for their events than Sythe ever will. In Sythe's case events only act as a community bonding experience that helps people feel like they are a part of something larger and that the site and the community is worth sticking around for.

What events don't do is actually make the forum any more active which is why the CDT hasn't actually accomplished anything but that's something I've just given up on since no one actually listens and they just keep doing the same things because that's easy or something. Just look at the few posts about the CDT in this thread. They are just cognitive dissonance saying these hard facts are wrong or they are just silent because I can only assume they don't want to admit what they've done hasn't worked?

But let's look at something that is positive because my negative rants are rather annoying and stupid:

Movies and TV section. Activity has actually increased and by a pretty good margin and what I think the most likely reason is people like @SellerMan and @n4n0 have been basically curating the forum by posting interesting threads and having interesting discussion. Activity breeds more activity people.

I generally try to actively create new discussion threads, aswell as maintain current ones. Sometimes it may just be posting daily/weekly, but as long as it is proving fruitful, i'm okay with it.

 

I definitely understand how you feel. What do you think would be some good ways to garner more activity on the site then? If not for CDT activities and the like that is. I'm just curious because I see potential for massive growth but I'm not too sure either what the best approach would be

 

I've downloaded all 350,000ish posts in the:

• General Discussion
• Sports
• SFA
• Media (Including subcategories)
• Technology (not including programming since it used to be separate)

I current can parse out from every post:

• The username that posted it
• The userId of the user that posted it
• The time it was posted

Currently I can just open one thread at a time so I need to write some more tooling to open all threads and categorize them into their individual forums. After that I'm going to throw together a very basic Postgres database and toss everything in there.

If anyone has a desire for any specific stats or graphs just let me know and I should be able to get them within the next week or so.

 

Can you do the Scammer/Spammer/Scam Archive VS the rest of the forum? @SuF

 

I can't mine the entire site because I would:

A) Have Richard murder me in my sleep
B) Run my friends VM out of disk space or bandwidth

I don't have access to the Spam Report Archive so I can't do that unless I get access. There is the added issue with forum pages get slower and slower the higher the page count. So Report a Scammer only has like 130k posts but nearly all of them are in very small threads so there is like 2000 pages of threads. Once you get about like page 30 it becomes pretty slow and I'm assuming it does quite a number of the Sythe database and I'm not sure Richard would be happy if I DDOS'd the site by mining them.
