For those who are in love with the same sex, is 'gay' a word owned by them?

If someone says, "That's gay", it generally is referring to something being stupid or silly.
If someone says, "That's homo", it generally is referring something to homosexuality.

As said above, does this give the right for certain individuals to own the rights to a word?

What do you mean by "own the rights to a word".

Like legal possession? Or moral possession? The former is unlikely and the latter is just fictional.

Words have different deffinitions. Or used in different contexes makes it mean differently.

Not sure what the question truly is.

As in, if you are to call something 'gay', do those that are homosexual own that word? Like, is it supposed to be offensive to them? It's just an interpretation of the meaning "happy".

How can you legally own a word?

No, but its generally frowned upon because words such as faggot and homo are discriminatory against homosexuals. Calling a gay person a faggot is like calling a black person a ******.
Indeed. Because the word 'faggot' and '******' are insulting words, do said people have rights to that word?[/QUOTE]

P.S. - Why is that blocked out?

Sythe doesn't even approve of it.

Indeed, but if used in a certain way, does it give ownership of the word to said group of people?

Not sure what the question truly is.
I hope I've made it a bit more clear.

Is anyone claiming to have ownership of a word? Or are they just offended when people use their sexuality as a negative term? I agree that people shouldn't be so uptight about it when usually, it's not even a stab at homosexuals, it's just idiomatic at this point. There is no offense taken towards you if you are homosexual and someone says something is really gay, so I don't see why any offense is ever taken.

If you call a pig, a pig, would the pig own the word? Beats me...

Like, is it supposed to be offensive to them? It's just an interpretation of the meaning "happy".
You can use tons of words offensively, even though they may not be inherently offensively.

How can you legally own a word?
You can copyright, trademark, and in some countries restrict free speech. I suggested it because I wasn't sure where you were trying to go.

If you call a gay person a faggot, you are simply pointing out to the world (if said in public) that they are gay. If you called a person who isn't gay a faggot, then the person being called a faggot should just stop crying over it and realize that the person calling them that, has just told lies.

Beautiful Haiku is beautiful.

Yeah. A friend of mine that is bi was saying that males who are homosexuals or bisexual have the rights to the word 'faggot' but not 'gay'.

Me neither, as the 'n' word for black people, but there must be some history behind it that I am unaware of.

^This?

As in words that may be deemed offensive to one another. As a human, per se.

You can use tons of words offensively, even though they may not be inherently offensively.
Well, I'm not exactly sure what that meant, as you used two adverbs back to back. However, do words that are offensive to others give such persons the right to said word?

If you call a gay person a faggot, you are simply pointing out to the world (if said in public) that they are gay.
Because that's how it is interpreted when said.

If you called a person who isn't gay a faggot, then the person being called a faggot should just stop crying over it and realize that the person calling them that, has just told lies.
Why would they be crying though?

Anyway, how do you own a word?
I'm not certain. Is this possible?

I think unb4nn3d means; should they have exclusive rights to use the word?
Exclusive rights to use a word to a particular group of people. Yes.

Do you mean like, isit ok for a gay person to call someone gay, and not ok for a straight person to call someone gay?

This is more of a problem with race discrimination, rather then sex discrimination, example (im not 100% sure if im allowed to swear or use offensive language on here, so i'm going to replace the word you all know *begins with n* with orange.

Is it ok for a black person to call another black person an orange? and not ok for a white/chinese/mexican(other ethnicity) to call a black person an orange?

Personally i think it is more racist for a black person to say you cannot say orange, its our word, then someone from a different ethnicity to say it, reason being it could be the fact (obviously not always, everyone is different) that the specific black person thinks his race has the right to say a word that other race's cannot say, making them supirior, which is more of a discrimination then someone calling a black person the word out of spite, imo.

As long as race's/groups of different sex's/backrounds/religions etc etc try to claim ownership of words or think its ok for them to say words, yet not others, the harder its going to be to rid this world of ignorance and discrimination.

I personally think it should be 1 rule for all, and if you know saying something is going to upset someone, then don't say it, its as simple as that.

Nobody really has right to any words, gays dont own faggot as black people dont own ******. It's just a way of life, these words were created but not specifically for the race it is implying. An example would be scientist, just because their a scientist it doesn't mean they own the word
