Windows or linux?

I noticed that our new web host offers free Windows server licenses. While I'm not a fan of windows server, that did get me thinking: is it any good? What reason would you have to use one of these?

It seems the web as a whole is based pretty strongly off of Linux, but there are some good things which Windows has to offer. At my day job, we do a lot of things with Windows, including 3D graphics, number-crunching, collecting data, etc. The typical web mantra says that you should be using a linux server to do this, but the Windows technologies don't seem that bad, although sometimes expensive (such as MsSQL.

Are there any benefits to using a windows server in your opinion?

 

I use windows servers when I can, just more familiar to work with. I don't see a problem with that unless you have some specific task you need linux for.

 

Linux is best for web hosting IMO. It's more native to most people, you can use cPanel, it's quite nice and VERY lightweight.

 

Depends what suits your needs and what you like to be honest. Apache for Linux is pretty much considered one of the best out there.
