What exactly do you like about socialism?

 

Sadly, we have idiots who have tried and wish for that to come to great nations who are a democracy. Don't get me wrong, Socialism and Communism have some ideals which can be incorporated with other forms of government to make it more secure and stable, but in their raw and base form they don’t benefit a society. An example would be the Soviet Union.

And, to answer your question, I wouldn't want anyone controlling me other than myself, which is why I usually vote Republican, since they do want less government.

 

The first problem with everyone's (and I mean just about everyone--including the USSR) assumptions about communism is that we all believe that we can just "be communist" one day. Communism is, ideally, the end in a long evolution of societies. It is utopia. It is after a long process of problem-solution-problem.

In that vein, no one in this world can be communist, because it won't work. Why won't it work? Because we don't live in utopia where people aren't greedy, prideful, private and angry. We're humans, in short.

In theory, however, yes, everyone shares everything. There is no inheritance, there is no ownership, because everyone owns everything. And in that, no one needs to want for anything--we have hungry, homeless, sick people who cannot help themselves--in a uptopic society this is unnecessary. Communism looks at that. At the world as it could be, not the world as it is.

 

I enjoy the benefits of socilized medicine but other then that I agree with sythe

 

well i believe that we would all be better off living in caves and tp and dealing with natrual disasters such as volcanos, and earthquakes rather then having to worry about a fucking missile getting shot up our ass because of our retardly corrupt government. im positive that this world will end soon enough.

 

Living in caves? What of the 20-25 year lifespan, the brutal work for just enough food to eke by, and the crippling diseases for which you can do nothing?

 

What benefits exactly? That is to say, what is it about socialized medicine that the free market can't provide better?

 

The fact you don't have to pay for it. But in the end you are paying for it since taxes are used to pay for it in the first place. Don't forget, in the free market there are no taxes which means it's much easier to afford a living.

 

sythe, not trying to be rude, but socialism technically IS communism. Most people assume it is a step away, but socialism is basically just a dulled down version of communism. Not trying to be a smart ass, but the distinguishable features that differentiate the two are very small and inordinate.

 

Socialism is basically Communism, but with a state that controls the means of production rather than the people.

 

Thats the thing.. In communism, technically the state IS the people, so the state is still controlling it.

 

Technically-techinically, there isn't even a state. Everyone controls everything.

Yeah it isn't even that - people don't realize that everybody will be poorer under socialism while free markets will bring unimagined prosperity.

 

Socialism is just as utopian as the anarcho/capitalistic ideals some of you are promoting.

While the former depends on people to be hard working, the latter depends on people to restrict their self-interest so that it doesn't harm others.

 

Perhaps. At least ancap doesn't infringe on peoples rights and is logically consistent.

 

couldnt agree with u more sythe. honestly, after seeing Bush in office here in the USA, id love to see Libertarianism and Anarcho-Capitalism come into play.!
