Explain to me why murder is wrong.

Because it's the sixth commandment.
But I'm sure you want another reason, but I'll leave it at that.

Because Ur taking Someones Life Away From them..

Ok... so you guy explained what murder is, taking away someone's life.
Now try explaining why it's wrong. lol >.<

My understanding of why murder is wrong is because;

You're stealing another humans life, without consent, or justification. Not to mention it being socially unacceptable.

I guess i learnt murder is wrong from when i learnt not to touch hot plates :)

Although, the same thing can be said for an abortion, but i believe in that case, it depends on the situation of the beholder, you are really taking a life away BUT they haven't created a life as compared to someone 10 year olds or old, the reason I’m saying 10 year olds is because most kids start to make their lives, although killing BORN children is completely unacceptable and thus why it remains ILLEGAL

It's wrong because you are taking another persons life from them...well I guess all of us will have our lives taken if this is true

^ Going to be the biggest murdurer or all.

Because living is regarded as THE most valuble possesion everyone has.
Without life you would be nothing, therefore taking someones life away is like a gazillion times worse than say stealing there car.

when you think about murder like really think everyone has killed somthing in there lifetime ants spiders for example so is that not murder sence it is a living creature.

Without justification and consent?

Say, someone has killed your mom. You decide to kill that person beacause he murdered your mom. You brother gives you the consent, saying it's a great plan.

You have both justification, and consent, so does that makes it ok to kill someone?

It is wrong because we make it wrong. It is ingrained into most of us by society from the moment of our birth, and it is a partial instinct, since not murdering does help further the human race.

I'm a bit surprised by the responses I get. They just weren't what I expected.
Cutting through the "It just is" and "Murder is wrong because it's murder", I'm gonna give some feedback.

Would you be so bold as to say murder is right?
In some cases, yes.
If someone were trying to rape you, would it be right to murder them? I say yes; it's only self-defense.

Because living is regarded as THE most valuble possesion everyone has.

Now this is the kind of response I was looking for. This is just about the best justification I have ever heard.

I'm surprised your actually saying this Danny?
Well, this a thought experiment. I find that most people just take it for granted that murder is wrong because it's their instinct, without giving much thought as to why.

Also, might I remind you that this is a public forum, where you have just made my name public, CHRISTOPHER!?

Murder is wrong, because it does take away everything from a person, I live a life full of loved ones, I do not fear death but I fear lonelyness... Death means loss of this all then I think it is not right. But nobody knows where death takes us so I could be wrong.

Would you be so bold as to say murder is right?
Well, there's a different between not being wrong and being right. Some things are distinctly indifferent... like eating toast in the mornings. Is that wrong? No, but nothing makes it right either (unless you're trying to find a superior nutrition).
The only way you can justify murder being right or wrong is religion (God, more specifically), I feel. Most deem it to be wrong, but others, like some Islamic extremists have shown, often deem it to be right.
That applies to all morals. If you are to say murder is wrong because you're taking away someone's life that doesn't belong to you-- that doesn't make sense. Then you have to explain why thievery is wrong. And if you say because it's dishonest, you have to explain why it is wrong to lie, etc etc... and then you'll see that morals make no logical sense. There is no gain from it... you are spending every precious moment of the only life you'll ever get following the rules that others want you to follow. Is it a 'give and take' situation? No. You act merely with the hope of getting gain, even if subconsciously.
Do you gain anything from being what you feel to be a good person? No.
Are the qualities of a good person defined? No, therefore it's impossible to be universally such.
Do these "morals"/rules contribute to the prolonging and progression of the human race? Usually.
Is it better to live than to never have existed? No, it's quite indifferent.
Therefore, are you doing a favor for future human beings by prolonging their existence? No.

In some cases, yes.
If someone were trying to rape you, would it be right to murder them? I say yes; it's only self-defense.

Self-defense is a little different then murder. Self-defense is a sort of last/near last-resort type of thing, and murder is the act of a first resort/option of a persons decision.

In Dictionary.com, the definition of "Self Defense" is:

Self Defense:
–noun
1. The act of defending one's person when physically attacked, as by countering blows or overcoming an assailant:
Used in a sentence: The art of self-defense.

Murder and Self Defense, when applying death to both words, isn't totally different, but not the same concept.

It's a commandment.
Why would killing someone be a right thing?
If it's in terms of self-defence, then yes, I think that would be a right thing to do.

Kinda a dumb question but yes. Would you think its ok? What if some one killed your family or something. Think of the traumatic effect it would take, so it creates evil in people and is very wrong.

It is not our place to judge whether or not someone has the right to live or not. It is a moral belief, an observed and engraved belief, a religious belief, and law. Sure, if someone killed your mom, you would kill them. But what does that solve? That eases their pains and lets them off easy. I think it to be a better punishment to have them locked away and deprived of rights for the rest of their lives, getting their asses kicked in prison and shit, then to just end it all for them. Makes it a win:win for them.

We don't have the right to judge whether or not someone should be killed, religiously that is gods job.

Self defense is not murder in my opinion.

Guess that covers most of it =\
