Does playing the lottery make you greedy?

Given the odds, are those who still choose to the play the lottery greedy or just optimistic?

 

I'd say just wasting money.

 

As humans, I'd say we're all greedy to a certain point. I'd say its a bit of both. Like many others have, people think they may also hit the jackpot and they may be right... they'll only know if they play. Besides, the few dollars that go to the ticket might've gone down some other stupid path. The decision to play is not a stupid one if done so moderately. What says one day I'm not gonna win?

 

$1 per play isn't that bad.

The odds of winning say so.

 

The idea of the lottery is people just want to get rich from doing nothing. I suppose in a way that's kind of "greedy"

 

Ive bought MAYBE $200 in $1-2 dollar tickets past two years and won $600. Maybe im just lucky, hardly felt that way considering I won most of it on one ticket for $400 so there were lots of losers. Somewhere in west dallas, my picture is on a bulletin board holding a $400 fake check.

I dont feel very stupid regardless. Im $400 on top. I dont play religiously and not very often, just on days I'm feeling particularly lucky I drop maybe $10 in tickets.

Op id say optimistic, atleast in my case. Those people who have ticket buying groups and are all gung ho about it may be getting a little greedy imo.

 

Playing the lottery is statistically stupid for those who get no enjoyment out of it. It's been called a stupidity tax more than once. However, many people derive some non-monetary utility from playing -- happiness, excitement, etc. -- so it's entirely possible that for these people, it's worth it. Play for fun, not for profit.

 

If you've got money to waste and enjoy the thrill of what could happen, then I see no harm. If someone has barely anything, and are not educated in what they are doing, and are hoping to 'win big', then yes, I would classify that as stupidity.

I wouldn't say greedy, that really isn't the right word.

I think people just like to think "what if?" I mean a lot could be done with a cool $100M or more. There is a certain entertainment that people get out of it, that exceeds the few dollars they spent. That being said I don't see myself ever buying one.

 

Everyone who enters the lottery is hoping to "win big" - You don't buy a ticket and not have the thought cross your mind once.

As Darkest said, I don't think greedy is the right word, what's wrong with spending $10-15 weekly for the chance to win 25m+? There have been a few big winners here in Australia, and like they say, you have to be in it to win it.

 

People tend to think that they will eventually win something out of nowhere. Said that I would say they're more optimistic and less "hopeless" with every time they loose money. But if the amount is $1 then I see nothing bad with it.

 

Every Friday the guys at my work all pool 5 dollars and we buy one big ticket.

Buying lottery tickets is an overall stupid decision and waste of money. If the lottery was actually a viable method to make money you would see rich people buying tickets. You never walk into the store and see the guy with the brand new BMW buying up lottery tickets. The only people you see buying tickets are middle class or lower and are generally very impulsive people. I'm not saying you can't get lucky but odds are it will never happen.

 

Everyone plays in the hopes of winning. Is it not the same thing, win or lose?

 

No it makes you dumb. Greedy people want more money not less of it.

Personally I think it only makes people attracted not greedy but this is odds not lottery.

Well that me explain. When you win, you will get the feeling of winning again
it was easy just bet on the teams who is gonna win and will give again.
(Now i am talking about odds not lottery) In odds there is a big chance of you winning but it wont be 1 million. It will be around 10 dollars if you are lucky. If you are really lucky as someone i know. You can win 10000 dollars by only betting 10 dollars. This is how you get attracted to odds again. Eventually not everyone is lucky as that man and they will maybe win 5 times 8 times. They will keep on betting also if they lose. I know a guy who still betting and he has a budget around -150$ sometimes he wins like a lot about 100$ but that is 1 of 100 and the 99 times he has lost.

I dont think odds making people greedy not them i know when i ask them to borrow some money they are willing to do it.

I have been oddsing myself and the first time i actually won but then my 2nd and 3th time i lost so i had something about -5$ didnt really bet many money but then i eventually stopped as it seemed like i was not good at it.

I think it's pretty worth it as long as you don't spend ridiculous amounts of money or have some kind of delusion that you'll win for sure.

I like to spend like $5-10 once in a while on scratch offs just for the excitement of seeing if I win anything xD

 

The odds are definately not on my side but lotteries are still won. I would play with the hope of winning something, not necessarily winning the jackpot although that wouldnt hurt. Playing is also fun and its not that expensive either.
