What nationality are you?

I am German

 

Canadian af, 6th generation.

On my father's side: my earliest ancestor who was from elsewhere was my grandmother's grandmother who fled France during the German occupation in WW1. My grandfather's ancestors also came from France, but a long time ago on one of the early expedition vessels from Europe.

On my mother's side: I think it was a grandparent's grandparents type of situation again. I don't know much about my grandmother's side, other than that her family was Welsh. My grandfather's family was Irish and I'm fairly certain his grandparents were immigrants.

So, I'm 1/2 French, 1/4 Welsh, 1/4 Irish. I am bilingual and speak both French and English.

that's not how it works. until 60 years ago, jews didn't have a country, but they stilled maintained an ethno national identity. You can be a jew that isn't practicing. jew is an ambiguous term that describes culture, nationality, and religion.

IDK how gypsies work, but I'm a Jew. Just trying to point out that Jew is an identity separated from a Jewish person (religion). Jewish refers to Judaism. Jew refers to the culture/nationality (nationality in a pre-nationalism sense). By pre-nationalism I mean before ~1800-1815. Jews were a nation for hundreds of years. A nation didn't always need to have a territory, just a common culture/language. When they lived in ghettos, they had their own courts and collected taxes. Similarly, referencing this: Nationalism (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) "Native American Iroquois constitute a nation but not a state,"

Anyone can convert to Judaism (Chinese. Nigerian, Russian) so it's not an ethnicity. But it is a religion/culture. The nationality part is iffy, but I think they technically are a nation. Honestly, it's pedantic BS. Nowadays Jews have a double identity. For example, Moroccan Jews identify as Moroccan and Jewish.
