What is wrong with being a Catholic?

I'm Catholic, and most Protestants tend to not like us. Mainly because they believe we worship Mary as a God.

This was probably a bad idea to make this thread, it should be Christians as a whole defending the teachings of God, not Catholics vs. Protestants.

Most people here are atheists, so they don't tend to like people who are outspoken Christians. I'm a Protestant (Methodist, to be specific), but it's not like we don't like you. You really can't talk about Protestantism as everyone thinking the same exact way. Apparently, and correct me if I'm wrong, you pray to the Virgin Mary. You should pray only to God (according to us), and praying to Mary is like worshiping her, because if you pray to her, you expect her to solve problems, and only God can do so.

How does the Roman Catholic understanding of “saints” compare with the Biblical teaching? Not very well. In Roman Catholic theology, the saints are in Heaven. In the Bible, the saints are on earth. In Roman Catholic teaching, a person does not become a saint unless he/she is “beatified” or “canonized” by the Pope or prominent bishop. In the Bible, everyone who has received Jesus Christ by faith is a saint. In Roman Catholic practice, the saints are revered, prayed to, and in some instances, worshiped. In the Bible, saints are called to revere, worship, and pray to God alone.

A short list of why Catholicism is a bad thing.
  1. All of the absolutely horrific things that the church did when it had near absolute control during the dark ages including, but not limited to: the Crusades, the Inquisition, countless witch hunts across Europe, the suppression of scientific knowledge, etc. make for a church that is not lead by divine wisdom at all, but rather the superstitious faith of a small group of selfish, evil individuals who don't care at for the well-being of their fellow humans.
  2. All of the dreadful things that the church has done in modern times, including: the covering up of children who were molested by priests, the prohibition of birth control, the spread of completely factually incorrect knowledge regarding birth control to attempt to justify their irrational prohibition (such as when the pope said that condoms increase the risk of HIV transmission to the people of Africa who are in the middle of an AIDS epidemic), the spread of other factually incorrect information (such as when the pope claimed Hitler was an atheist, when in fact he himself was a Roman Catholic), etc., etc. make the church one of the most appalling organizations in modern times.
  3. The belief that all people are guilty of the sin of adam, from the most innocent baby, to the kindest man alive, and that we all deserve to suffer for the sin of a man who lived 6,000 years ago is absolutely appalling.
  4. The homophobic, anti-women teachings that the church continues to maintain, including: that homosexuals are going to hell, that women are in some way inferior to males, and so cannot serve as priests (or, as Richard Dawkins once put it in regard to the Pope, "he's an enemy of women, barring them from the preisthood as if a penis were an essential tool for pastoral duties") are terrible.

You think it's bad to be a catholic? Try being a Muslim.
Everything I see about muslims, the very first post is flaming them.

A short list of why Catholicism is a bad thing.

[*]All of the absolutely horrific things that the church did when it had near absolute control during the dark ages including, but not limited to: the Crusades, the Inquisition, countless witch hunts across Europe, the suppression of scientific knowledge, etc. make for a church that is not lead by divine wisdom at all, but rather the superstitious faith of a small group of selfish, evil individuals who don't care at for the well-being of their fellow humans.
The Crusades was a clash between multiple religions, so don't go pointing the blame on Catholicism for it. The Inquisition was a terrible event. At the time there was no Protestants or Catholics, it was just Christians. The Church was incredibly corrupt at the time, which is why I believe the Reformation was a good thing. To open up the eyes of these corrupt officials.

[*]All of the dreadful things that the church has done in modern times, including: the covering up of children who were molested by priests, the prohibition of birth control, the spread of completely factually incorrect knowledge regarding birth control to attempt to justify their irrational prohibition (such as when the pope said that condoms increase the risk of HIV transmission to the people of Africa who are in the middle of an AIDS epidemic), the spread of other factually incorrect information (such as when the pope claimed Hitler was an atheist, when in fact he himself was a Roman Catholic), etc., etc. make the church one of the most appalling organizations in modern times.
The Catholic Church is just sticking with the tradition they have always had. Using condoms and birth control is technically a crime against nature. Not that many things we do now a days are crimes against nature. Before condoms and birth control were even invented, the Church forbid the people to pull out during sex. They're just trying to stick with there traditions, even though it's not the smartest thing to do.
[*]The belief that all people are guilty of the sin of adam, from the most innocent baby, to the kindest man alive, and that we all deserve to suffer for the sin of a man who lived 6,000 years ago is absolutely appalling.
That sin is forgiven after you are baptized.
[*]The homophobic, anti-women teachings that the church continues to maintain, including: that homosexuals are going to hell, that women are in some way inferior to males, and so cannot serve as priests (or, as Richard Dawkins once put it in regard to the Pope, "he's an enemy of women, barring them from the preisthood as if a penis were an essential tool for pastoral duties") are terrible.
The Catholic Church is a traditional organization, I agree only males should be able to serve as a priest, to preserve this tradition.

Women are more than welcome to serve as Sisters. As a Sister, you actually do alot more for the community and less fortunate.

EDIT: I realize Catholic means "universal" before you start calling me out for that.

I don't like catholics because they deny empirical evidence and stick to the good ol' word of the lord.

Should point out- the Catholic faith, not the church.

I completely agree, and have no clue as to why condoms/contraception arent condoned, IMO Natural Law should apply to everything, not just what the church chooses to apply it to.

TBH I think comments about the church are useless though, the same arguments can be applied to US/English/Australian/Most western systems, yet we done see droves of people jumping to change their citizenship.

...Roman Catholicism is even worse than atheism itself, in my opinion! Yes, that's my opinion! Atheism only preaches a negation, but Catholicism goes further: it preaches a distorted Christ, a Christ calumniated and defamed by themselves, the opposite of Christ! It preaches the Antichrist, I declare it does, I assure you it does! This is the self...Roman Catholicism cannot hold its position without universal political supremacy, and cries: 'Non possumus!' To my thinking Roman Catholicism is not even a religion, but simply the continuation of the Western Roman Empire, and everything in it is subordinated to that idea, faith to begin with. The Pope seized the earth, an earthly throne, and grasped the sword; everything has gone on in the same way since, only they have added to the sword lying, fraud, deceit, fanaticism, superstition, villainy. They have trifled with the most holy, truthful, sincere, fervent feelings of the people; they have bartered it all, all for money, for base earthly power.

Noone says it better than Dostoevsky.

Should point out- the Catholic faith, not the church.

It is getting old seeing religious people accepting partial beliefs, and denying others, and then calling themselves of the same religion. You either accept everything the church represents, or you're not of that faith. It can't be some, it has to be entirely.

And if you were baptized Catholic, it means you recognize the church. It's like a submission of your soul when you get baptized, they own your ass.

Honestly, the worst thing about being a Catholic is that they are theist. That's it. The hocus pocus retarded ass traditions and horrid history they have is all excusable, but their faith makes them sorry excuses for human beings. In all reality, there's nothing right about being a Catholic, or any other religion for that matter.

Is it? The bible itself doesn't prohibit birth control in any shape or form, you'd think an all-knowing god might have thought of throwing that one in if it really is such a crime against nature.

Your usage of the eternally abused 'technically' amuses me as well, as if there is some kind of concise list of what is and isn't acceptable to nature.

Not that many things we do now a days are crimes against nature. Before condoms and birth control were even invented, the Church forbid the people to pull out during sex. They're just trying to stick with there traditions, even though it's not the smartest thing to do.
Are we talking about catholic traditions or the so called rules of nature here?

Plenty of things are traditional. For hundreds of years it was traditional to keep a slave, or five, or to burn women at the stake.

Tradition, especially religious and especially Catholic tradition has caused incalculable misery and suffering for two thousand years and continues to to this very day.

Eh didnt phrase my question properly, I accept the church and faith are linked, im asking yall to ignore it.

Let me stop you right there.

I am an Atheist, and 90% of my friends are Christian. I don't have any problems with the Christian religion, so please, don't make an entire group seem full of hate due to the actions of a single (or small population of) person(people).

I believe most people have a problem with Catholicism due to the fact of the on-going stereotype that Priests molest the children within the church (which is extremely idiotic to presume, especially without any prior knowledge of the Priest, his past, etc.)

However, on a religion-to-religion conflict against Catholicism, it extends its' roots back to the 6th century and possibly even prior to that, when the Church of England battled the Roman-Catholic Church, physically, and in debate. People learn from their ancestry, which in a lot of cases, comes down to a "He-said, She-said" state of mind, where the Catholics accuse Anglo-Saxton Christians of treacherous activity, and the Anglo-Saxton Christians blame the Catholics for going against the original deity (with no name other than "God").

So, basically, it's all either about stereotypes, or the fact other branches of Christianity disagrees with the practice of Catholicism.

The priesthood attracts weirdos.

You should pick up a history book and actually read it, because that was the most nonsensical post I've seen in a while.
