What all to add on a resume?

I want to add more, but not sure what. Previous job did not require a resume, so I haven't made one. Currently have

Objective
Education
Skills
References.

No awards aside from sports.
Not a lot of accomplishments that would work well for a resume.

 

It depends on what you're applying for. One of the biggest mistakes people make is making a "general resume" and handing it out to multiple types of jobs.

You want to tailor your resume to the job you are applying for.

 

I've thought about that, but I'm apply for a tire service shop, and have no experience with cars.

 

Put down that you've previously worked where ever doing... and then go into more detail. Try and make it sound like the work you have done before can be used at the tire service shop. E.g. talking to customers, working to a deadline etc. You can also put you are eager to learn new skills or words to that effect.

 

I don't put an objective on it.

 

It's really just used to fill up space for me.

 

What kind of job are you looking for?

 

Applying for a tire service shop currently. No experience related to cars though, hence why I need things to be added. Aside from this though, I plan to go around and apply at most places. Fast food and retail will not happen though.

Yeah, two years working there. Has nothing to do with most/any jobs. Skills acquired though is a different story.

 

Well you can still write 4 or so bullets about it right? Just write some bullshit about what you did.

Under experience, put your job and then under that bullet like 4 things of what you did.

• Responsible for blah
• Developed blah
• Assisted customers with blah
• Managed blah

That will fill a good chunk.

 

Ditch the objective and the references, unless they're specifically asked for. Mine has education, experience, and skills on it. Keep it simple.

 

I wouldn't recommend putting references and aim to make it one page. I have a small section on my resume near the bottom which lists my Languages, technical skills, certifications and training, activities, and interests. It's pretty good to list something like these but keep it to under or close to 1/4 of a page. If you're having trouble making it long enough you could always add a mini summary of yourself but it's better to include this on your cover letter.

most people think you need a resume a mile long, you don't. infact i find it best to have it be just one page.

Add any volunteer work you have done.

 

Agreed. It can be great filler if you have little work experience.
