    Wendy's GFX

Let me start off, that i have now decided to join sythe forums For its GFX section. I think its amazing how many talented artists are on this forum and i have joined becuase im kean to learn aswell.

I have some basic skills in sketching, but not that much exsperiance overall. Do you think a good sketching ability is neccasary to become good at photoshop? I know wendy is a great sketcher/drawer, is this the same for all the good pictures i see around sythe forums?

Sorry if this that was spam. Just had some few questions.

    My advice for you wendy

    For the elf

~Where i have put box's around are little area's where you have slightly shaded or made it darker in little patches. Im not pro, but to me this doesn't look right. They would probably look better in different locations, but where they are at the momment just doesn't look right.

~I also Don't like the font, and where it is located. Although i do like the shadow you have put around the font.

    For Halo's Sig

To be honest i don't like this sig much at all. It's one of your bottom of the pile Designs you have created.

    Things i like about it-

~ The sunlight in the corner of the picture.
~The fact that there are clouds in there, making the impression that it has just been storming.

~The font and where it is located although you could still be a bit more creative.

    Things i don't like

To be honest there isn't many. I just don't like the look of it. Mainly becuase you can't make you what exactly that human figure it supose to be.

    Suggestions-

~ I can sort of see how you have put in a bit of a rainbow affect in some sections. I love this. Make it bigger and better. Put a rainbow in there somewhere. The idea that there has recently been a dark storm and its clearing up is wonderfull. Its great for any evil person (aka - zammorak followers/guthix)

    Undead girl rants and raves

I love her, shes wonderfull. I just have some suggestions.

~ Forget the dark backdrop you have tryed to put her in. Being a dark girl she needs to be in a dark place yes. But its too boring as it is. I have a feeling that this is just the start of the background, if it is then ignore me. But incase it isn't. I think that you should put her in a dark location, that has something interesting going for it. Like in a dark cave with little goblins in the background, also lowering her height and making her a bit smaller to make it look right. Or Put her in like a temple or something like that. She would be great to work with tho, if you want some more idea's add my msn. I'd be more than glad to help.

Hope this has been helpfull. Im only a beginer. Actually i just joined this forum to learn GFX. So this advice is coming from a beginer. Sorry if its irelevent. A beginer shouldn't be giving advice :p

    Thanks.

    Thanks for un-tinting it.
But seriously, they both look good.

And the name "Red Dwarf" isn't actually referring to a Dwarf which is red if anyone thought that.

LOL. You can just fly away with Rimmer, and Mr Flibbles. Not a lot of people are going to get what your name means. Especially on a MMORPG website :p

*sigh* common guys.... thats a little sad don't you think. Try not to follow what Mr. Filefragg did....

yeah...back on topic. your drawings are pretty fucken sick. same with your photoshop colourizing. dont really like your sigs that much TBH though. needs way more effects and stuff. try not to you a singluar color background with no effects. make it a gradient, slap in some brushes and the likes...

Nahhhh Im not feeling it... The picture you have drawen just doesn't look right...

Plus, needless to say it doesn't look anything like what he asked for.

I think you should put the sheild on his back. Also don't have her leaning so much, her back looks really long. Plus You can't really make out who they are...

Fix the picture up a bit and it will look great. Texting, background, colours and lighting are great.

Wendy, I thought I'd stop in and take a look.

I will say, your drawings are something I could never do. Take that and run with it XD

Anyway, leet shit. Yes you can improve but with the skill you already have it won't take much longer to be near perfection.
My my, I will say, I admire your work.

    Thanks mDrew,

Always good to get some praise :p, however, I am well aware of my strengths (sketching) and would request that you also throw in some advice on how I could improve my weak-side (sigging, PS fx, etc.). I think all I need to work on for the time being is PS technical shtuff, but I'm always looking for tips and critical analysis.

I cannot fault your characters and sketches in anyway, although your sigs need a lot of work.

On there the charcacters probably are probably great, or they look it from what i can see.

However there is the main problem, you can hardly see them, the text is almost more of a focal point than the drawings.

The text is a bit dodgy, and the lighting and composition need work.

Again, I CANNOT FAULT YOUR DRAWINGS, they are absoulutly brilliant, however may i suggest you post the characters on their own, aswel as the signature?

Ok- I seem to hold a bit of a different theory on the meaning of signatures..
I've been trying to step out of my sig "World-view" for a while and try new things.. but anyways- here it is:

A forum signature to me is personal.
In my opinion, the text should be the focal point of the image. I mean, why not? A sig is a mark of identification, is it not? I would expand, but its really not necessary and I think most of you who know me will understand my point.

I will continue to try new designs using different methods, but I think my (seemingly crappy :p) sig work is also part of my style and I don't want to completely abandon it. Simple sigs just seem more attractive to me.

There is a fine line between simplistic, and un-worked. If you want to accentuate the fonts, it's possible to do so without ruining the continuity of the signature. Because your strength lies in your drawing, you have to use that to your advantage. Start to take a Photographic look at things, and you'll find that your works get much better, very fast. See my thread on photography in graphic help.

    http://www.sythe.org/showthread.php?t=312649

After considering that, let me CnC your latest work.

    Issues:

Lighting on the right end corner made me not be able to see that this was supposed to be Zelda. I only noticed Link for the first 10 seconds of looking at the signature.

Another lighting problem is in that the renders are not shaded for that type of lighting. They are solidly lit up, suggesting even lighting. In your signature, however, your light only comes from the right.

Text was given 2 different colors, and 2 different styles, put on 2 different levels. This gives the idea that you want to say "WoW" sucks, as in the game, World of Warcraft sucks. In fact, you were obviously going after putting his name on the signature.

Considering the photographic side of this creation:

Your render is on the far right end. Your text is put at 2/3 of the left side. This makes the signature look as though it is off balance. There are 2 ways to fix this; 1. Move Link and Zelda to the center, putting the words 'wow sucks' around them (Wow to the left, Sucks to the right) 2. Put Link and Zelda at a 2/3 position, and put the text just overlapping to the end shortest.

    Good Point:

Non-intrusive filler used for the background. Having it out of focus makes the space interesting, but doesn't draw attention away from the point of topic.

    Tip for the future:

Use the example of the bench image in the photography tips as an example of how to make your sketches in the future. If you want the text to be the point of focus, then make the render point toward the text in one way or another, or play on the text visually with your render in another fashion. Keep in mind that you don't have to make the text the point of focus this way, but it will still be noted, and not so offensive to the artistic portion of the signature.
