Do you need to port forward to use it?

Whenever you "Host" something.... that other users will be using without it being LOCAL, Than you have to portforward it..


Port Forwarding, is exactly what it means "Forwarding" the Port.
Example, Runescape Port is 43594.

Now, When someone puts your ip address in a Runescape Client, it needs that specific port to connect to the specific server.


Obviously, sounds a bit confusing.
Meaning:

[Your Computer] Default Computer Port for HTTP is 80
|
|
>Server< Default Port: 43594
|
/ \
Player 1 ; Player 2 Connects to YourIP and Port ;;43594


Now, another example. TeamViewer uses the same process,
Your computer hosts the teamviewer host if he is remotely connecting to you. The default port for that is usually 600; 611; 1024; and so many more.

Every server requires ports and ips;
You name it, Steam, Google, Youtube, everything.
