[Update please!] Give us mobile!

How on earth can we not have any optimised mobile access to the site? Sure, there's the mobile skin but it sucks. I'd rather eat my own shit than use it.

First off, there's TapaTalk (holy jesus christ yes it's free!!!!! all you need to do is install a plugin and away you go) - a highly versatile forum app that I've introduced on other forums. There's no excuse for not listing Sythe on there and having the plugin installed. It's fully compatible with this version of vB and the only real issue I foresee is that donor ranks/custom UIs etc. won't be visible from the app. The TapaTalk app is not free though, so maybe run a competition where the top 10 highest posters in a month will get the app bought for them.

Second, please at least introduce a mobile skin that doesn't look like crap. Even something as simple as this would be a vast improvement on the current mobile theme http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=151186 - if you can't find a free one then fuck me sideways, I'll pay for one.

Finally, please no bullshit excuses about demand not being high enough for a mobile skin. I still have access to google analytics for the site and hey look, iOS and Android are way up there.



You should be working to cater toward the growing popularity in mobile web development, not shunning it.

I find it unusable.

 

As an iOS user, I do tend to find myself using the regular theme rather than going through the pain of the mobile theme. But maybe that's just me.

 

Agreed, so many folks use mobiles and mobile devices these days to browse the net, instead of booting up their machine. Something needs to be done.

I don't think this particular one is available for vb 3.6 but something similar wouldn't be hard to create with some basic knowledge of mobile design.

It's not unusable with safari. Honestly, I'm torn on the issue of mobile layouts because while I like to have something suited to my device, at the same time I like to have the same functionality as I do on my laptop (which in my experience quite a lot of mobile layouts don't always offer).

But I definitely think the mobile layout should be one suited for mobiles. As long as it can be optional.

 

Is there a reason why Sythe isn't available on tapatalk?

 

I think I tried to use the mobile version once, and it was a horrid experience and wouldn't use it again. I tend to just use le normal style for mobile, wouldn't be against a mobile version.

 

No idea. I'd use it through tapatalk if I had the option.

 

I don't really browse using my phone as it's a piece of shit, but when I use my brother's blackberry I just use the Nextgen Lite, shows the same as it does on PC. But since I don't browse on phone I guess this could be useful to those that browse a lot on them.

 

It could also open up the forum to people who don't have access to a desktop and don't have the patience to use the shitty skins we currently have.

Anyway, I think the current theme is fine for mobiles. I have no problems browsing from my phone, and I do so quite frequently. I would actually be less happy browsing from that TapaTalk app, as I personally find it quite clunky.

I actually brought it up several times while I was on staff, FYI. It's only now that I have measurable success from trying it on other forums that I'm confident it would benefit Sythe.org.

 

Within the week you get demoted from admin you need to do it? Not a week sooner, when you had the power?

I think the admins need to start looking at user suggestions and actually do something. They shouldn't wait until they lose their powers, make suggestions, and try to get their position back.

 

I wouldn't have had the power to do it then anyway. I couldn't install plugins or skins.

No, but you had the power to get suggestions brought up to those who could. Whereas now, we need to wait months for great suggestions to be approved (unless it's suggested by staff or ex-staff).

You're a fool if you think the way that Sythe.org handles suggestions is good.
